Opioid induced hyperalgesia

I'm reaching out to my SR family to see if anyone has experienced this phenomena.

My cousins lung was removed two weeks ago due to cancer. The doctors are confident they got it all. Prior to her diagnosis, she abused Vicodin regularly to get high. For many years.

Since her surgery, she began uping her intake (more than 20 pills 10/1000 Norco per day) and also needing morphine and fentanyl lozenges for constant breakthrough pain.

Has anyone witnessed this "opioid induced hyperalgesia" before ? From what I have read, it can happen in 30% of people who have used opiates.

It's not just addict behavior (although I'm sure it's that too) This poor woman is in constant, inexplicable pain.

Never seen it myself. What do the doctors have to say? Are they aware of her past use/abuse?
