Helllp!
Hi Plenny, your freelance cooking sounds very positive and seems like something you want to pursue.
Just a thought on the bar tendering, I live in a small village with one pub, 100 yards from my house. Not a busy pub and when I stopped last July I didn't miss it but the pub was always there, subconsciously calling me.
I had thoughts of leaving the village, but, the pub shut down in January and is now being pulled down for another building. Sweet for me, I think. Though I wouldn't have drank, or so I thought, it would have lured me.

Wow Mags, one pub in the village and it shut down? That must have been a relief. I had to work at the bar again today. It was harder today. But it helps that every second that goes by, another example of how I don't relate to this job, or want to invest in it, presents itself. It's so vapid. Even as experiential businesses go, chocolate, food of all kinds, massage.... This is truly silly. I was itching to get out. Back to cooking tomorrow. Phew. Goodnight, Plenny
I think you made the right call. It would be hard to stay sober surrounded by booze all the time. I'm a chef and when I first quit drinking I did struggle a bit in the "work-hard, play-hard" culture of a pro kitchen. But I toughed it out and over time my apprehension faded away. It's a minor impediment not being able to, say, sit in on tastings for wine dinners. I did briefly consider it since one swishes the wine in the mouth and spits it in a cup but ultimately that's playing with fire since wine was my DOC.
Something will come along. Having the free time will allow you to pursue freelance jobs (are you talking personal chef work?). All in all sobriety is the big thing.
Lastly, look at income based repayment. If your loan is a federal/govt loan then that is an option. There are deferrals available based on hardship but income based repayment caps the total monthly payment based on income.
