Dry drunk?

Have seen the term "dry drunk" used here a few times. I'm not sure what that means. Could someone explain it to me?

Term that means one who is sober, but hasn't changed other than removing alcohol from their system. Usually attributed to being in a state of misery / unhappiness but sober.

I have heard the term, some attribute it to AA - but not really sure.
Goal is not just sobriety, but happiness in that undrunkness!

Pisses people off though when used towards them = judgmental.
I agree - derogatory IMO

peace

I think it's meant to mean someone who is doing/ thinking/ feeling pretty much everything an active alcoholic does without actually drinking. I'm not sure how useful it is as a concept either :=]

Someone who has stopped drinking, but has no desire to stop drinking. They have been 'pressured' to stop drinking by their spouse, family, friends or boss but are simmering inside with burning resentment and indignation towards those who have cruelly 'forced' them to stop drinking.

Of course there are those few misguided people who mistakingly refer to anyone who has quit drinking and is not 'working a twelve step programme' as dry drunks. The assumption being that these poor unfortunates have simply stopped consuming alcohol but are not doing any form of self-development or moving forward with a productive life. The assumption being that they are simply stagnent.

The only way I've ever seen the term used is in a pejorative manner.

This is an interesting concept to me. I tried to stop drinking once before. Although I wasn't drinking, I also didn't do anything to identify or address the underlying reasons for why I was drinking in the first place. I was resentful and tense, until I started drinking again after 9 months. That's what I imagine when I hear the term "dry drunk."

If you've quit drinking but are constantly stewing in resentment and struggling with sobriety and quietly, secretly wondering why the hell you bother with sobriety and stuck and not doing anything about it but stubbornly just not drinking because by god you'll show THEM!!!

.... You might be a dry drunk

Thanks for the input everyone. That's definitely not what I want from sobriety!

I looked up the symptoms of this "syndrome" once. Most of it applied to me when I first quit drinking. Some people take longer to heal. It was very unpleasant but I worked through most of it. I think it is just a useless phrase. If someone is being belligerent then say they are belligerent.

Its an AA term. Someone that has stopped drinking but has yet to face their demons and make amends. Pretty much someone that doesnt drink but has no peace.

I wondered what that was. And "AV". It's probably something simple to figure out which is why I hated to ask.

Hi.
My sponsor with 47 years sobriety and still goes to meetings says “A dry drunk is a person tho not drinking still acts and reacts as if they were still drinking.”
Simple and accurate to me.

BE WELL
