Just a few thoughts. Your sponsor's beliefs are hers. She probably really believes that if you aren't in AA you are screwed. But her beliefs aren't necessarily reality.

Lots of people tried many things to stop drinking and found that AA was the only thing that worked for them. And if you think that a program saved your life you might be a bit enthusiastic about it. It's only natural.

AA wasn't my path to sobriety. But I have come to respect it. Just take a minute and read the stories of people on this site... Many are sober without AA and happy. I am both.

Great feedback! Lots to think about! I think I will find a new sponsor if I decide AA is my path. Time will tell. I really don't like some of the brain washing in AA. But people in AA say "your brain NEEDS washed!" Whatever. I'm sober today & haven't had a drink in several days. I am going to re-read all the posts tomorrow but I don't respond to threats well. She basically told me that if I don't go to AA I will die! Pisses me off the more I think about it!

It used to peeve me off big time to.

Came to realise my sponsor cares more about my life than my feelings.

wax on wax off

Genuine questions:

What exactly is the role of a 'sponsor'?

Are you assigned a 'sponsor'?

Is it like a sensei?

Heartcore! You've said it all! I completely agree! But, Serinidad, that doesn't mean you should necessarily give up on meetings. If it helps you maybe you should go to other meetings or get another sponsor. You decide. Good luck.

AncientMariner, the role of a sponsor is to take someone else through the 12 steps of AA. No, sponsors are not assigned, one chooses another to sponsor them. And no, in my opinion a sponsor is nothing like a Sensei.

So maybe it's just her. Maybe there is a better sponsor out there for you. Sometimes you have to shop around. I'm sure you can find a sponsor who is not so extreme. Not everyone in aa shares her beliefs. Some of the real old timers carry it a bit too far.
