What's in a chip?
What's in a chip?
I've been attending CR (a christian-centric 12 step program) every week since I began my sobriety. Before the larger group breaks into small sub-groups there are teachings or testimonies and announcements. A few weeks ago, they mentioned that anyone with a milestone approaching to let one of the pastors know so it can be celebrated. A couple of weeks ago, I went up to the pastor before breaking up into the sub groups that I was coming up on one month milestone. He smiled and told me that 'one year' is the first milestone that is celebrated in the larger group. I felt KIND of STUPID! But, he was very nice and said that the sub-groups celebrate other milestones and that my group leader will have a chip ready for me if I tell him.
In fact I did tell him and this week, I got my 1 month chip. It was actually a AA chip since what the leader received was a 60 day chip from CR. I got a 30 day chip from his AA group to give to me. People congratulated me and said encouraging words, etc.
It got me thinking 'why did I want this chip so bad?' 'what's in a chip?' Especially since my subgroup (male alcoholics and substance addicts) don't seem big on chips and celebrating milestones. I realized that it matters to me because it's a reminder of progress I've made and also gives me something to shoot for.
I am looking forward to 60 day CR chip. If my group lead forgets, I WILL remind him!

congratulations!
I dig the chips.... they feel good. It's a reminder of an accomplishment... a satisfying mile-marker on an important journey.... a reminder and a motivator to journey on.... For a long time, I carried the 24 hour chip with me at all times.
Yep, there's somethin' in a chip.

What's in a chip? Plastic , aluminum or sometimes brass in these parts. Funny, a disgruntled member stole all the chips 2 months ago and everyone was perplexed as to why. Of course he was on a bender that night and did some other crazy stuff that put him in jail. In the interim of waiting for chips to arrive some longtimers gave their younger chips to those needing one. I consider those priceless.
AA does not have chips. Many groups purchase chips from outside agencies and give them out to celebrate sobriety time milestones. I think it's a great unofficial tradition no matter what group does it.
Everyday we don't pick up is a milestone. Congratulations on your month!
