I don't think it matters SW. The definition is only useful to get to the acceptance stage for the individual. This was my experience. Whatever we call it, alcoholic, someone who does not drink, addict its all semantics that is fodder for fueled debates on here. The irony is the arguments are about how round the World is not if its round. Once I accepted alcohol was no good for me I was able to begin living a healthy and enlightened life.

I am an alcoholic, addict, father, entrepreneur...really I am just human, which means I am flawed by nature.

Yes, I'm an alcoholic.

Mostly I'm just me.

Personally, I don't like the term alcoholic as it has such extreme connotations associated with it, when in fact, people should be getting help long before they fit the misguided "category" of alcoholic.

My brain, my relationships, my life, were all suffering long before anyone, including myself, would have called me an alcoholic.

Oh...p.s. Sorry, I'm not new.

If I drink, I drink more than I want to or should. I never got falling-down drunk or suffered from blackouts but didn't like myself the way I was. I decided to change that and the easiest way was to become a teetotaler. I don't think labels are particularly helpful and can quickly devolve into semantic issues. Don't worry too much about what you are, worry about what you want to become: sober.

Alcoholic? Yes.
Alcohol dependent? Yes.
Alcohol abuser? Yes.
Heavy drinker? Yes.
Problem drinker? Yes.
Addicted to alcohol? Yes.
Problem with alcohol? Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
YES!!!

So many things I can call IT.

Fortunately I have one plan that takes care of everything regardless of how it is labeled.

SW - why not be more forthcoming and let people know why you are asking? Being coy wreaks of inauthenticity. I realize you are not, so maybe articulate your motives with such an OP would be useful. Why do you need to know what others think? I think the responses are well intended and in line with what I would have expected. Most members post because of something on their mind. So to say you simply posted doesn't really cut it - there had to be some motive - conscious or subconsciously - perhaps the good is in this element?

I'm not a fan of that word. Never have been and never will be.
All that matters to me is alcohol was ruining my life. Every bad thing that ever happened, happened b/c I was drunk. Every lost job, relationship, money, et al....was b/c of alcohol and my inability to manage it.

Some may call me alcoholic...it kicks my AV into high gear when I call myself that, so I call myself a "problem drinker". You all can call me what you want, lol!
