First Real Test back among them........
First Real Test back among them........
Last night my football team - DA Bears played. I spoke to a friend I haven't chatted with in quite sometime. He is a "normal " drinker and a football fan.
We decided to meet up to watch the game together at a franchised sports bar - BWW. I had a little anxiety as it was my first test so to speak of being out and about. Wife asked me if I thought I was ready. I replied Yes, well still not 100% convinced.
I sat around people watching the game who were obviously drinking beer. My pal never even asked why I wasn't drinking - just sweet tea. It was funny though, he drank water all night and has no idea I have quit drinking - he just wanted water!
Had a great time sober! Not even a hint of wanting a beer! No cravings or mental obsessions. It was, well - new normal!! This at a little over 100 days of purposeful sequester.
Gained some new confidence and a realization - I really, really can do this!!
Felt great.......
Just wanted to share that with SR friends - it can be done!!

Good for you, I'm not only glad the Bears won - but more importantly that YOU are winning in the game of sobriety.
I love the mango habanero wings there. I agree with you completely about the difference between a dive bar or pub and not running away from every place that servers alcohol. Sadly, society has decided to put alcohol just about everywhere these days. Luckily, the line of smart and not smart places to hang out is pretty easy for us to see if we really pay attention to our choices!

Best way to describe the mango habanero is sweet and spicy with some after burn.
I am no guru by any means, but it can be done - TOGETHER we stay sober.
SR has been a huge part of getting me this far!
peace
Yaay for you.
I especially like the part where your friend only drank water, without even knowing that you were in sobriety. Just goes to show you, sometimes we were the only one drunk at that "drunken party" we thought we were attending...

Yea, " Everyone was drunk at the party" What a load of jazzzzzz.
oh those little HUGE victories!!
Yes, I remember those initial scary forays into the land of "places where alcohol will be and others will be drinking it". Tentative and a little uncertain.... but bit by bit finding that it really wasn't that scary after all. Finding also that I was able to have fun WITHOUT ALCOHOL, even in places that have alcohol!!
I agree we cannot run from it, cannot plan a life sobriety approach that is based on hiding from alcohol. If we do that, we are just avoiding drinking, not really choosing a sober life. In my opinion, anyway.
I do sometimes have a tough time in those environments, when others are drinking and I get a little tug of jealousy or resentment or longing. But over time those feelings have faded for the most part and when they do come around, they don't really last long.
Good for you! I'm glad you had this breakthrough.

Way to test out your sober wings. I am at day 70 and I have been avoiding bars but not for much longer. My daughter just got a job at a local sports bar and I plan to eat and drink (no alcohol) and watch a game.
I can't help but wonder if your friend wasn't wise to your sobriety. I had friends over several weeks ago to play cards. We don't get together too often but in the past it was usually a late night into the morning drink until you drop and play cards event. This time when they came over they didn't bring any alcohol. I was amazed but it was also kind of awkward. We still had a great time. I think they did that out of respect for me and I think its likely your friend did that as well.

Over the last couple years of my drinking It was at my house in the garage - smoking butts, talking to the dog. I am sure the poor dog walk 5,000 miles in that time.....Honey, I am taking the dog out - again, again etc.....
The INSANE things we do while drinking!
Know a gal who had a " drinking chair " in her house. Has evolved into her mediation and prayer chair.....They are both happier now
