Prayer/Meditation Poll

SR is such a wonderful, diverse group of people. Thankful to have found it!

I am curious about friends on here and their habits of prayer/meditation. The LAST thing I am want is to start a controversy about religion!

From a standpoint of recovery, very simply do you utilize prayer/meditation and how often?

The poll considers praying and/or meditating the same.

My answer is simply yes - daily.

You??????
Kind Regards,
Flynbuy

Don't pray but do meditate.

Alynn 09-18-2014 09:09 AM

For me- I feel much stronger when I start my day I'm prayer and mediating on Gods word.. Most the time on my knees or face to the floor. Not only stronger but at peace.. I can do all things through he who strengthens me

I pray every night and thank God for the day I have had. I try to remember to thank him instead of having a laundry list of things I am asking for.

Meditation is something I have done, but not lately. I hope to do more in the future. I really find it helps clear my head and takes away my stress. It really is wonderful how well it works for something that seems so simple.

Prayer - 10 times a day - possibly ?

Not even sure that daily covers it ?

For me it would be many times a day.

Thanking God for my many blessings as I drive down the mountain each morning.

Prayers of thanks and praying for others before most all meals.

Praying at night just before going to sleep (been a little weak on this one lately,)
as the getting older Mountainman falls to sleep so very fast.

Mostly prayers of - thank you.

I do twice a day as part of my routine but I would add that how I pray and meditate have changed. I used to ask for things. Now I ask for direction. This is done to my HP, which is not a traditional God.

Soberpotamus 09-18-2014 10:37 AM

I am averaging 2-3 meditation sessions per week.

alphaomega 09-18-2014 10:49 AM

I'm at a point where I spend many hours a day in both prayer and meditation.

I used to think it had to be all "formal" to really "count", you know ?

But now, I realize, that every positive thought, put out towards another, is like a little prayer.

I try to remain perpetually mindful of my thoughts ,as they are energy , and have the ability to heal and connect us vibrationally.

I also spend much time in gratitude. Thats a game changer for me. :)

Probably not the same way as most define it.

I do not pray to a deity, but I meditate as in "spend time in quiet thought".

So pray: never.
Meditate: constantly.

dwtbd 09-18-2014 11:40 AM

I was going to answer never, but then I saw AO's post and if positive thoughts toward others counts then I would say alot, especially toward the SR others, my empathetic peeps.

I dont know if I could ever be in a frame of mind to meditate, it seems I am always aware of the act of thinking , and it seems meditation would be to 'get beyond' the awareness of thinking, perhaps I just have the wrong connotation.

Do I comtemplate ?, get lost in a train of thought? , yep all the time, does this count, even though I do not start out to get lost ? Coz if it does and it relates to or counts as praying , I may be a monk minus the itchy pious garb.

I don't pray, but have been interested in meditation for >10 years now, just struggled with discipline and regularity. It's a whole different level and experience now that I don't drink at all. I try to do some form of meditation daily but occasionally skip days. I find it extremely helpful when I do it regularly.

Love it!

Guy I listened to talked about how to meditate. I never had attempted to and it's still very much developing. A 1-2-3-4 breathe in out method while clearing ones mind. That is/was my problem = clearing the mind.

He explained if your mind wanders simply say to yourself comeback. Don't scold yourself for drifting, just comeback.

I'd get to one and think - my back hurts, did I feed the dog, do I need gas for the car......oppps. Comeback.

Works for me.....Of course I have not had an original thought in many years, so it may be my mind is pretty blank to begin with!

I don't do either at least as I understand the terms. As an atheist, prayer is not one of my practices nor is meditation as I understand it from study of Buddhism. I do spend time in contemplation especially when I am walking which I do daily.

Kaneda8888 09-18-2014 04:32 PM

I do both prayer and meditation every day. Just cant start the day without them !

Jeremiah2911 09-18-2014 04:42 PM

I pray multiple times a day-actually not so much prayers as in lengthy times on my knees. I talk to God all through my day and I write 3 things I am thankful for every morning to remind myself why I need to stay on this course of sobriety. Prayer keeps me strong

Eauchiche 09-18-2014 06:49 PM

I am a Catholic. I start the day with the daily scripture readings, Morning Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours, and ending with the Rosary. It takes an hour for everything. It has replaced the hours I used to spend surfing internet porn. Many other prayers during the course of the day.

Finrod 09-18-2014 08:06 PM

I pray every day and for me, it helps and works. On the other hand, I have trouble clearing my mind enuff to meditate.

I have traditional prayer with my kids every nite, but find myself talking to God, my h.p., several times during most days. Whenever I have some of my old memories or thoughts, I ask Him to help me strengthen my spirit and resolve to get through and past whatever it might be that has triggered the old mindset.
