alcoholic/ addict scared need to know things get better My names James and I'm a 23 year old substance abuser . I did the whole heroin opiate thing at one point then I did the whole speed thing, but my main thing has and always will be alcohol. I drink and I put my family through hell breaking windows and punching holes in the walls... the next day I wake up in complete regret and disgust at my actions. Just coming off one of those binges from yesterday. Does it get better guys? Help me please |
It sure does get better, with support and work. Welcome to SR |
Thanks dude it means a lot.... I'm so disgusted with what I've put my family through. |
hey James It gets MUCH MUCH better. Like patman said, with support and hard work. You don't HAVE to live like this. |

I'm just over 4 months sober now after getting my 2nd DUI in May and doing jail time. So yah - been there. Disgust. Big time. stick around. |
The only way is up. But I think it's important to remember how you feel now and store it in your memory bank-if you're ever tempted it will stop you in your tracks! Everybody makes mistakes-it's accepting that you have and wanting to change that counts. |
Welcome to the Forum James!! Plenty of people here that have experienced the same thing, and it definitely does get better, the initial period can be tough, put push through beyond that and life starts to get brighter!! You can do this!! :) |
Welcome James, you did the right thing reaching out. This is a great place for support. Read posts, take the advice, share your thoughts & make your own path to sobriety & make your family proud of you again. |
Hi James, Welcome :) Alcohol triggers aggressive and destructive behaviors in many people. The good news is that it does get better once you put down the bottle. You are lucky wanting to quit at such a young age, before worse things happen - keep it up! |
does it get better .. beyond your wildest dreams i am the best upgraded version of myself constantly upgrading you will love being sober but your going to have to work hard for it sounds like your prepared to work hello welcome good luck |
You are not alone. We know how hard this is, and I can assure you that things will get better. |
Thank you so much guys I needed just these simple messages : |
I will echo what's already been said. It gets way better. And the super good news for you is you're seeing this at 23. Which means holy hell! You have so much BETTER ahead of you! I didn't get it until my late thirties and took me until 41 to finally stay on the sober path long enough to see how much better it really is. Oh man, to have learnt this at 23... You can do it man. |
You mentioned your family. Knowing the problems this has caused them, think about how relieved they will be. Agree with FreeOwl......mid 40's for me......and feel lucky for that. Good luck friend. You can do it. |
Welcome! :) You're smart to take care of this now. You've got your whole life ahead of you, make the most of it by living sober. :) |
If it didn't get better none of us would be here nintendoguy90 :) Glad to have you join us :) D |
Welcome, James. It does get better with commitment and hard work. But even the hard work is better than the shame, guilt, and regret. I am glad you are here! |

Welcome James! I'm only a week in but I'm here to tell you that every day is a little better than the last. It's hard but so worth it! Hang in there! |
I want to welcome you too James. :) We're so glad you're here. Things are going to look up. |
