Nutritional support during detoxing

My drinking has taken its toll on my health in terms of nutrition. I either skipped eating or ate greasy crap. I know that alcohol robs your body of nutrients as well so it is a double whammy.

Any suggestions as far a nutritional supplements and/or food intake?

BTW - why is it that when you drink you want to eat salty, greasy nasty food? I never recalled ever wanting a nice salad after a binge

There are actually detox nutrition plans. You can try Google. I found that most of them suggest a high carbohydrate intake for about a month. Makes sense, alcohol is a sugar - so to keep the brain happy, carbohydrates are the go-to choice. Helps with cravings.

My general nutrition plan has evolved after losing 70 pounds and keeping it off many years ago, so I am on the watch. It's still difficult for me to keep carbs low at six months sobriety - but my main goal right now is to stay in my calories and try to limit ice cream and eat enough protein.

Not saying I am able to do that 100%, but that is my goal.

I think a simple, but healthy diet is the way to go.

If you need information about vitamins, etc, it's best to talk to your dr.

I was with you, Sober Wolf, until the cod liver oil. I think I would rather kneel on dried peas than ingest that stuff. Just sayin'

It's always best to see your Dr.
None of us can know what you need nutritionally speaking .

What worked for someone else may not work or even be suitable for you.

A Dr is probably best to get a few blood tests, see exactly what your lacking and what supplements you need!!

Best being safe!

When I got sober I started taking a B Complex vitamin. All the B vitamins help with nerve damage. I eat mostly beans, seeds, nuts, fruit and vegetables. I eat turkey burgers also. I have bad days but who doesn't? Slow and steady wins the race.

Why not just eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean meet, dairy products.

I think a balanced diet, is always a good idea not just at detox, but throughout your entire life.

If you think you have major deficiencies, only blood tests with your doctor can tell you the time of day.

I try and stick with whole foods as much as possible, and focus on meats, fish, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds. But I certainly have cake and ice-cream as a small treat on a regular basis. I take a Vitamin D supplement and a multivitamin. Early on, I read a book about treating alcoholism with vitamins and I took several vitamins, including lots of B vitamins. Not sure how much it helped, but I wanted to do what I could to heal myself.

Thanks for the input everyone. I actually saw my doctor yesterday and he did a vampire thing and took 5 viles of blood for analysis. So I will know in a day or so if I need supplementation etc.
