Just joined / just quit - heres why

Because of my first post, and the unanimous SUPPORT in it .....
(my first post was on this forum yesterday titled "so simple - so complicated")

I joined to "get ready " or "look into " no longer drinking....
HAHAHAHA seeing my reality on a forum woke me up!!

I am a very strong person once I make up my mind...Now thats happened.
I can do this, I quit smoking (WAY harder for me to deal with ) in 06.

From my First post - and YOUR responses I just learned that:

I DO have a real problem- yup and getting "worse"
Im NOT alone
Im acting like a drunk
Im thinking like a drunk
I CAN DO this.....

I set a date to stop drinking. the date is TODAY (now)9-13-14
Here I go.....Im going to start "livingnow"
Thank you!

I quite smoking in 05, stopped drinking March of 14. It's only been a short time for not drinking--yet I think the cravings were a lot easier to handle then the nicotine withdrawl.

Congrats on your decision to make changes. I'm at day 12 and will be honest in letting you know the first 3 to 5 days are the hardest physically due to withdrawals. It does get better and you will be so glad when the worst is over. Post and read often. The biggest thing that has helped me is to have a plan each day. That helps keep me on track. I've also set some short and long term goals to work toward. Good luck!!! Oh, most important thing is take it one day at a time.

Nice.......Great Decision

Just remember, in a few days, weeks, or months, that AV (a term you will see used a lot here, Alcoholic Voice) that is lurking in your brain WILL try to convince you that having "just a couple" at a ball game, at a bbq with friends, having dinner with your wife at a nice restaurant , etc. is perfectly ok. In fact it will tell you it is a GOOD idea to test yourself in this way.

Expect it, Fight it, Ignore it..

So true NorMar. I had 64 days sober and that pesky AV popped up and cost me several months of my life. I thought "just one" of something I didn't even really like would be ok. It cost me a lot. Almost cost me one relationship I value dearly.

Awesome! Yes thats exactly how it happened with me! Reading the posts made me realize I wasn't alone but I did in fact have an problem. Welcome aboard! Were all in it together. Im only 13 days in to forever. Lots of emtions in the last two weeks. Push through them. Don't listen to the AV that will soon tell you "It wasn't reallly that big a problem" or "I can just cut back" It's so worth it to stay sober! It realllly clicked for me reading posts and people are scared for their lives or posts that a member has passed because of the addiction. Scary stuff! Not worth it.
Glad you are here

This is excellent! Welcome to the forums. When you get that "What can I do instead of drinking" feeling, come here and read. Read everything - you'll never run out of informative, heart-wrenching stories.

You're doing a great thing today.

13 is my lucky number (birthdate) - I think it must be yours, too!

Great decision. Keep us informed on your journey. You can do it. Youre seeing that alcohol is a common affliction.

That's great to hear.

Get through the first week, then you're on the home stretch.

well done.

Love it! I felt the same way when I first came here - was just thinking about quitting. I was delusional.
