Blood Donation

Anyone have their blood donation refused because of a liver enzyme detected successfully donating now that you've stopped drinking?

I used to donate regularly, but then started receiving letters from the blood bank saying my donation was discarded due to something being wrong with my liver. Upon receiving the letter, I would tell my MD. My MD would test my blood and say there's nothing wrong.

Now that I've been sober for 57 days, I'd like to participate in my organizations blood drive, but not if my donation is going to be thrown away.

That's never happened to me.
Either the blood bank or your MD must be wrong - they can't both be right?

Yeah they can. My MD says the blood bank does the fast/cheap test and the lab uses protocol which apparently is more accurate.

I know my friend had yellow jaundice as a child and she hasn't been able to give blood.

Can they offer an explanation as to why they refused your blood?

Yeah, they tell me why. They say when testing my donation they detected an enzyme associated with liver damage. Then I get tested by my MD and the MD says my blood test comes back clean in respect to liver issues. The MD goes on to say the blood bank's test isn't really a test, but a screening which is not as accurate as a real blood test.

I'm just wandering if anyone on this forum has issues donating blood. One of the things I used to do before my alcoholism got in the way. My goal is to return to normality.

Thanks

I don't know anything about the tests or liver screening, I just wanted to say that it's awesome that you donate blood. It really is the gift of life!

I donate every two months. What you could do is find out which enzyme is the culprit, then investigate it on the net and find out if it is an issue.
