Over 50 / Newly Sober - anyone else?
Just saw this thread -- thanks FnB!
I have 3.5 years and I'm 54. Yes, we old-ers have some different things to deal with -- often, lots more squandered years behind us, more unsalvageables, the feeling we have less to look forward to. For me, the best part of sobriety is peace of mind. The end of lying and despair. There was nothing, nothing at all to look forward to in drinking at the end -- not even the next drink; that was medical management for my addiction.
Sobriety is like refinding something you lost all your life. I'm grateful for every minute from now on.

I signed up today because of Cascabel. I am 70. I too was sober for many years. I stopped at 42 and gradually took it up again at 65. The progression was very gradual (I was fooling myself that I didn't have a problem) but that was just wishful thinking. I appreciate the older people here who share. I've been struggling but thinking about Cascabel is encouraging.
I started this thread at 90 days sober - I was 54 at the time. There's a philosophy I have come to embrace more each day. Simply, we all only get the gift of daily sobriety - there is no award for length of time, nor any status level based on years.
Whoever got up the earliest today sober has the most time. Live today as if it were indeed your last. Someday you'll be right. Be kind to yourself and forgiving. Do the best you can - we are all humans and flawed.
All who are sober today are winners!
Thanks for the thread bump......
Being ONLY 53, I am MUCH younger than you, but for you people who are over 53, it is a hard gig. I considered what age I would be- emotionally - now if I was not an alcoholic. 34. I have knowledge and experience, but a long ways to go with emotional maturity.
ALSO think on this..my sponsor as 75. He only got it and got sober when he was 69. I see my age- as being half way through my adult life. The top of the bell curve.
