An idea for gatherings

Since I have liver issues, one of the symptoms when I used to drink was breaking out in terrible hives. Lately I've gone to parties and weddings and when someone offers me a drink I say:

"Oh my gosh, thanks, but I'm going to pass. I'm so allergic to alcohol, I break out in these gross red hives..."

People don't push or criticize. They say "right! Here's some Coke!" And move on. They understand allergies!

And you are not lying. You are allergic to alcohol. If you drink your body has a terrible reaction and you will die eventually. At least I will.

It is working really well for me. Try it!

I'm glad you've found something that works for you.

I'm disabled so I often use the line 'if I drink I'll fall over' - it's not too heavy or detailed an explanation, and it's truthful and non contestable

I have told people I am on steroids for poison ivy. I am not ready to tell people I stopped drinking, I don't want to be a "buzz kill." Last party I was at, I drank seltzer water with a lime and everyone thought it was a vodka tonic. I don't want people to think ooooo alchi, can't drink or have fun around her.

I had started to get hives on my feet and bottoms of my legs quite regularly is that a sign of liver damage then?

Whatever gets you through a situation!!

Personally I've tailored things to "I don't drink, I'll have a soda and lime please"

I was always amazed that some people I know don't drink for religious reasons, but all they say is "I don't drink", they don't even flinch or get anxious about it, cooly and calmly the words come out, so I thought I wanna piece of that action when I got Sober!!

Yes Tic it is. My hives went away after I got sober and have not come back as long as I've been without alcohol.

Go see a doctor now!!

I have to say that is not medical advice it is just experience. Only your doctor can say for sure.
