first triathlon

Do any of you exercise fans take a race to get your mind of the booze? There's a sprint triathlon coming up on October and I'm thinking of joining. Is it a too aggressive agenda, being on detox and training?

Any thoughts?

Depends on your current level of fitness in all three events. The training will beat your body up a bit, but if you're in relatively good shape already, it's not impossible.
Again, depending on your current fitness, I'd make a decision if you are trying to complete or trying to compete? Will you be doing interval training, etc. or just going to do your best?
I'd definitely consider tuning up diet due to detoxing - extra clean eating.

DO IT!!

A sprint is a pretty approachable deal even if you're only in moderate fitness.

I signed up for my first tri also coming up this month. I was foolhardy and signed up for something called the "EPIC". However, I am downgrading that to the sprint because I haven't really trained sufficiently.

GO FOR IT!! Just set out to do your best and finish.... it'll be awesome.

The power of having a goal cannot be understated!

I did a 16 mile running race two weeks ago and was swimming 2,000mts twice a week a couple of months ago. I guess from that standpoint and practicing going forward I could finish it. My question is more directed to mental health, but I guess the answer is it can't hurt. Thanks a lot!

Mental health, it will do you worlds of good. Recovering brains loooove endorphins

Good luck! (Sounds like you could do Olympic distance if you were so inclined )

I'm not mental health professional nor do I purport to give advice of that nature... if you have concerns on that end I'd suggest you consult with a therapist.

That said - my OWN mental health has only benefitted from exercise. If you're able to log that kind of training distance, I would think you're more than capable.

For me, there is nothing as emotionally, mentally and spiritually nourishing as a big physical accomplishment.

If you do it, may you run, ride and swim with joyful bliss!!

endorphins; the best medicine....

Actually I did a very short triathlon in May when I was detoxing, and was very rewarding. The swimming part was on a pool, not the beach. Lets see how the sprint distance goes.

I just went through my old posts and realized it.

I did a couple of sprint triathlons a few years ago, and the swimming was the hardest part. So if you're a comfortable swimmer, then you should be fine! OMG, in my first tri, the swimming segment was in a river -- a big river. I really don't like swimming and hadn't trained enough, and when I did train, it was in a pool or a lake. My heart rate must have gone up to 200 when I started the swim! I almost called for the boat, but then I decided to just flip over on my back and kick with my legs until I could breath again.

I loved the biking and running, so if I ever lose this weight and start running again, I'll probably look for duathlon. No more triathlons for me!

Good luck!
