For those who like ZzzQuil

After some poking around online, I see this stuff contains alcohol.
I've noticed a few posts that a few take this stuff to aid sleep.
Just a heads up.

I refuse all sleep medication already anyway but not for this reason

Tonymblue 09-01-2014 07:06 PM

Thanks. All i know is that nyquill messes me up worse than vodka.

I couldn't figure out why I looked forward to it so much, after day three I saw the alcohol content!

Good looking out Dawg :)
I am one of those lucky one who has no problems sleeping.
How have you been doing? Still trucking?

Truckin' right along, Carlotta :)

luckily, there's plenty of non-alcohol based sleep aids available. i still use a sleep pill occasionally if my brain simply won't turn off for whatever reason (the most annoying nuisance in the world!)............. i purchased a "value" bottle of 96 sleep pills earlier this year for a measly $7, i still have some pills left over 7 months later.

i suspect the reason these various drug companies add that tiny amount of alcohol along with their sleep agent is that the alcohol "enhances" the sleepy effect, but that's just what i read online.

I tried ZzzQuil WHEN I was in my drinking days and it didn't do squat!

When I first took a look at the title, I thought it said who likes "ZZTop" ?

Just goes to show how old I am huh? Is that band still "ROCKING" in this Generation?

bunnezjp 09-02-2014 07:33 AM

When I tried to get Sober 4 years ago, I got addited to NyQuil because I couldn't sleep. Horrible....tolerance works just as bad as the bottle, and the withdrawal was awful. I take melatonin for sleep problems, but in general, I sleep pretty well now.

Yeah, I love how zzzzQuil advertises it as non-habit forming......

I try to avoid all medication unless I am in excruciating pain. Alcoholics/addicts and pills, sleep meds, pain killers, etc. are just a bad combo IMO.

There is an insomnia section of SR that has a sticky thread in it with great tips on falling asleep.

Yes, they're pretty much a 'Casino Band' these days, if you know what I mean.

I have used this a couple times.

It's liquid benadryl. I've never seen any alcohol listed in this. Now, Nyquil, of course has it.

?

edited to add - I only took notice of this post because I know one isn't supposed to drink with antihistamines. It's a warning on ZzzQuil's bottle too to not drink alcoholic beverages.

Some years ago an old timer in AA got into it and was buying it by the case until he found out about its contents.

BE WELL

Soberpotamus 09-02-2014 02:05 PM

My grandfather who got sober in his early 40s used to guzzle that stuff. Lol. Yeah, not so sure if it's a good idea for an alcoholic. Probably a very bad idea.

For years, I took Benedryl from time to time as a sleep aid. Worked like a charm and was supposed to not be habit forming.

But unfortunately, I'm afraid I've become a bit too reliant on it since I've stopped drinking. Taking 2 every night..its like i'm AFRAID I won't be able to sleep. I told myself I would get through this week of work (really MUST get sleep or I'm a zombie...and I have too much to do), and then next week really start tapering off it.

Anyone use Valerian? I noticed that the SleepyTime tea I used to buy has it as an ingredient, but then realized I could buy the vitamin itself and add it to any teas (I like to switch up flavors from time to time).

Yes for Velerian, because it's a plant extract and yes for SleepyTime herbal tea for the natural chamomile content. Both non addictive. But I limit my use to when I have a stressful time at work.

Soberpotamus 09-02-2014 04:58 PM

I used Valerian and Tryptophan as needed at nighttime. It worked well with no hangovers, and I was never tempted to abuse it. Now I'm able to get sleepy and fall asleep and stay asleep without it. I rarely use it anymore. Served its purpose in my first year of sobriety! I think I used the Sleepytime tea too. I used several teas and still use those.
