What do you think?

I just came across AVRT and I'm so serious about getting sober.I know a lot about AA and I've been to meetings but some how I keep ending up hung over and depressed. So I wanted to get an opinion about AVRT. Have you tried it? Do you know someone thats tried it? Does it work?

Tonymblue 08-27-2014 07:41 PM

Ive read a little. Didnt get the whole concept though.

Thanx for the feedback Tony. If u don't mind me asking r u sober? And if so how long? And if so how do u stay sober?

There's lots of information and discussion of AVRT here in the Secular Recovery section of the forum. I recommend the AVRT "Crash Course," which you can find on-line.

I have been sober for almost two years, with help of AA and lots of time here at SoberRecovery.

Im back to only 4 days. Had 36. Then a beer at a restaurant and boom 4 day binge on vodka. Man, alcoholism is the toughest thing ive ever faced.

That's the truth

AVRT is a pretty simple concept. What wants to drink isn't you.

I agree AVRT is a useful concept- "the addictive voice"

I don't agree with all the 'anti AA' stuff however that goes with it in the rational recovery framework

Find what works for you, but be open to trying useful techniques

It definitely has given me insight,
exposing the existence of my AV.
I am aware of the AV now, when it pops
up from nowhere. Defeating the AV
long-term has been my dilemma.

Thank you everyone for all your feedback I don't see why I can't try both. At this point I'm desperate. I woke up this morning soaked in sweat as usually, and still very depressed and feeling really anxious. However I do not want a drink. So this starts day 1 for me. I will not drink and I will not change my mind. And I'm going to find a meeting.

I am not an expert on it but I tried it a few times. Once I even shouted "NO!" while driving during a particularly heinous craving.

I had to learn and use every single tool I could find to make sobriety stick. I was physically ill at the end and truly wanted to be sober more than I wanted to drink but I still needed tools. I was shocked that one day 58 I got a wham-bam-thank-you-mam craving. It came out of nowhere and I was physically craving to the point where I couldn't even sit still. The AVRT technique seemed to help me that night.

Use and any every tool you can. You can do this.

absolutely use as many tools as you can. Hell, create some new ones if you have to!

ccam1973 08-28-2014 04:30 AM

Mrsj, good for you on making this decision.

Stick to it. It will get easier with time, I promise. So worth the efforts.

What has helped me the most is staying as active here on sr as I can. Read previous posts, any time you feel the urge coming on, jump on here with us.

I'm only on 53 days today, but this site has made all of the difference in my sobriety.

You can do this.
