Labor Day Reflections

If someone were to ask me what I did last year
on Labor Day weekend or how the weather
was, I wouldn't be able to answer that question.
(Fact of the matter is, most times
I couldn't tell you what I did a few days ago).

Most likely, last year, my sinister AV primed me
to stock up on vodka, get hammered Saturday
after work, all day Sunday and a good part
of Monday. Back to the job Tuesday looking like this guy:

I recall only bits and pieces of various Labor Days;
rain, sun, barbeques, fishing,
nursing the hangover, going away, etc.
This year, quite simply, I'm viewing it as
an extra day off from work to rest.
An extra day to let my body heal.
An extra day to get things accomplished.
An extra day to reflect on the scents and
sounds of another summer slipping away.

A time to reflect, yet move forward, trying
my best to leave my past guilt,
anxiety and regrets behind.

Any thoughts?

I am excited for a sober labor day. I will be on vacation with my new bf this year and the very next day will be my one year anniversary of sobriety. For me, everyday sober this year has been a blessing, there have been highs and lows but I know that deep in my heart being sober is the best thing I can do for myself. I wish everyone a sober, safe, and blessed labor day!

Lunar... I think we all have butterflies for holidays like Labor Day. I do anyway.

It's always great to have you be part of the weekender thread so look for it later tonight for the extra long version.

And don't worry you can't recount to anyone what you did last year. Make it so this holiday is one to remember!!!!!!

Hi! I'm so looking forward to a long sober weekend myself!

Lunar - I was totally like you, I would half look forward to a long weekend so I could just be juiced the whole time. But as my drinking got worse I would almost dread it, knowing how awful I would feel by the end of the weekend.

This weekend is going to be rest, relaxation, a little work unfortunately (but it's ok), and hopefully a little fun

I've found it hard to piece together past vacations, birthdays, and holidays too. It is amazing to begin stringing together these dates that I can now remember in great detail

Sounds like a great plan for a Labor Day!

What a wonderful post, Lunar - I loved it.

I remember decades of spending the holidays in a coma and going through the motions of celebrating. Fear of missing out caused me to cling to that old, sick way of life. I'm so glad for all of us that we know better now.

Thank you for sharing. I am also looking forward to my first sober Labor Day in about ten years. Last Labor Day I was going through the motions of going to the beach. I was nursing a hangover just like any other day. Headache, extreme dehydration, irritability, the regular stuff. Here's to a great day off!

I forgot about that part. I used to actually be a little scared for the long weekends/holidays because I knew what I was going to do and I knew it was really dangerous to drink that much.

I used to also always "Write off" the first day back since I wouldn't be able to do anything.

...and then there came a day when I'd take it to work to sip on to stop the shakes.

Oh yeah.
Vodka in a spring water bottle.
I'm disgusted to even think about it.
