Seltzer water and other non-alcoholic beverages addiction??

Lately my wife has been giving me grief about how much seltzer water I have been consuming. At bbq's this summer I will drink 18 or so seltzers in an evening. This amount and speed to which I drank is similar to how I drank beer, especially in the summer months.

Does anyone else consume their non-alcoholic beverages like they use to with alcohol? I look at it as it's better than me drinking beer...

I drink a ton of sparking water. I can't imagine why that would bother or alarm anyone.

I think she is making the point just to show me how much beer I use to drink. I also think she doesn't realize what this addiction is all about. She says to me "I just don't get it...are you that thirsty or what"? Especially when I am around other drinkers I have to have one in my hand. I'll come home after work and Ill put like 8 of them away like nobody's business.

I can drink a couple of gallons of decaf tea on a daily basis. Actually, I am constantly drinking either tea or water. What's funny is that lately I have been adding seltzer water to my tea. It's fantAstic. But my rationale is this...it's not alcohol!
Cheers!

I wonder if it isn't our subconscience trying to "catch a buzz" off of said beverages. It is interesting...

I drink Pellegrino, Perrier or other seltzer/sparkling water like its going out of style. I usually start with a Pellegrino b/c I love the taste and then switch to the cheaper non-name brand seltzer water. Funny...as I was writing that I just now realized that is the same way I used to drink wine. Hmm...interesting. Anyways, its water. I don't see a problem with it.

I like to slam a few LaCroixs or Dasani sparkling waters at night. Also drinking more caffeine and regular water. I think its fine to have a few but 18 seems really high imo. I would check with your doctor to make sure that amount is not harmful. Still better then alcohol.

Seltzer water isn't chemically addictive. Personally, I didn't substitute anything for alcohol.

I could only see this being a problem if you hyper-hydrated yourself. Consuming tons of water very quickly, while still MUCH better than consuming loads of beer, can also come with health risks. You'd have to drink over two gallons in a few hours, so it's really unlikely that this would happen. Still good to know about, though!

Other than that, where's the harm?

I drink a lot of La Croix now too, especially at parties! It really helps.

Me too! And seltzer water! This thread is great.

In the Living Sober book, maybe the chapter is Easy Does It, it talks about how alcoholics can't leave a sip of a drink behind and will always have a beverage on hand or read a whole book in a night. We read it as I was sucking down my giant Diet Dr Pepper, that's how I remember

If drinking water is frowned upon then we have reached a sad state of affairs! Enjoy your seltzer.
