Is Alcohol the Root of the Problem.

It seems very strange.

If I drink Alcohol.

I want Cocaine and too Gamble.

So if I stop drinking. Should the others stop or will i get urges?

I think it would be wise to quit all addictive-type behaviors. We too often replace one " drug" with another, or engaging in those behaviors lead back to drinking.

It's funny timing that you post this...

the past few days I've been noticing this correlation; alcohol and problems.

When I used cocaine - most of the time it was along with or after alcohol.
When I allowed bills to go unpaid and projects to sit unfinished.... I was also allowing alcohol in my life.
When I went through two divorces and the crap leading up to them - I was also allowing alcohol in my life.
When I got two DUI's - I had been drinking alcohol.
When I got arrested for beating up and destroying a phone booth in a drunken rage - I'd been drinking alcohol.
When I went to strip clubs and threw away money and precious time? Alcohol.
When I cheated on my wife? Alcohol.
When I ran up debts I knew I couldn't pay? Alcohol.
When I was thrown out of university? Alchohol.
When I got in fights? Alcohol.

In fact.... Looking back along the trajectory of my life.... I didn't always get in trouble when I drank. But every time I had trouble, I'd been drinking.

And here at over seven months of sobriety, life keeps on improving.

Huh.

WEIRD.

Thanks for your comments guys.

Freeowl.

I totally agree with you. Alcohol is so destructive. All stems from it by the looks of things.

I have never ever have wanted Cocaine without having maybe 3 or 4 beers. Some trigger then goes off. Then once in my head. Unable to get it out.

I just lose all interest in life and bury everything when I drink. Debts dont matter, borrowing money from friends don't matter. Upsetting family and friends don't matter. In fact I don't matter when I drink and too be honest I don't think I have enjoyed drinking for some time. Just feel remorse and guilt after every session.

Then lie to cover all the mistakes I made during it.

Bye, Bye Alcohol.

Hi. I believe 80% of the people in jail/prison are there as a result of something to do with drugs and or alcohol involvement. Tells me something!

BE WELL

stop drinking, don't do cocaine, watch your wallet, You Can Do This!

Alcohol was a "gateway" to a lot of other behaviours for me, when I took out alcohol, everything else went by the wayside!!

This is how I feel about my tendencies too. The only trouble I have gotten myself into has been alcohol related. So it's time to cut out the middleman. We cant control our demons when te booze is flowing. Not onl do we end up hurtin ourselves but those around is that we love and care about too.

It took me a long time to realize the obvious: alcohol was my gateway drug.

Free Owl hit the nail on the head for me...."I didn't always get in trouble when I drank. But every time I had trouble, I'd been drinking!"

I've had 2 different friends that are cocaine addicts tell me that that had to quit drinking in order to quit coke because if they drank alcohol, they would go right back to coke. I'm sure it could happen with gambling also.

I have never done coke, but gambling and strip club were 2 of my issues. I never did either one without being well-lubricated by alcohol first. Just my experience.

Ditto.

You can do this MJ. Start with removing the alcohol from your life. I still have urges to use cocaine and gamble but nothing remotely close to my urge to drink!

Don't take that first drink, keep your guard up and hopefully the other urges will lessen. With an addictive personality, I'm not sure if the urges will ever just "go away"; at least for me anyway.

Stay strong!

I used to get the urge for the white powder after I had a few beers. Even during my binge drinking days, I could easily turn down the stuff if I wasn't drinking. I just never had the urge for it unless I had first consumed alcohol. Now that I'm sober, I have no desire for coke. But not everyone is the same. As Dee suggested, stop drinking for awhile and see what happens.

I just saw a television show about this (I can't remember the name of it though). I didn't realize that combining coke and alcohol was such a dangerous combination.
