Stupid AA chip question....
Stupid AA chip question....
I guess this is part of my bizarre personality, but the question is in my brain today. When months of sobriety are celebrated in AA what qualifies as a month?
In other words, if one gets sober on the 5th of a month, do most folk simply wait till the 5th of the next month to pick up a chip OR do they count 30 days?? In our group some refer to it as the one month chip, others say 30days???
Like the title states, stupid question - but I have 60 days coming next week and just curious what common thought is?????
Thanks!

OK, so I have too much time on my hands.
365.25 per year (leap years accounts for .25)
divided by 12
=30.4375 days per month
12 x 30 = 360 days
If you count by 30, your 1 year sober, will be 5 days before the actual date you quit.
Food for thought.
OK I'll be quiet.....

sounds to me like you're coming up on 2 months
Do you celebrate your birthday at the 1st or last of the month you were born?
What if you quit on Jan 31? On Feb 28 do you have a month? After 60 days it shouldn't matter - except that you keep getting those sixty days.
I just use the 28th of every month if I even think about it. Eventually you will forget about days and months (I hope). But you will never forget your last/first day. That's what counts.

I would take it literally. If it had been 30 days, since I drank, but the month I got sober in was a 31 day month, then 30 days and one month are 2 different periods of time.
If the person giving out the chips said "30 days", I'd pick up a chip. If they said "one month" I'd wait until the next day.

This thread reminds me of a guy at a meeting that picked up a white chip, than continued to pick up a 30 and I think a 60 day chip. I think either he was confused (never saw him before), or he was catching up on lost time. Most people at the meeting seemed confused too, but kept on clapping every time he got up to get a chip, although the clapping was less and less each time he got up. lol
Thanks all - I am a rule guy, usually for others! Just part of my ego that I'm working on.
To keep it simple, I think I'll just use the date as each anniversary. Less on my brain at this point.

In our group they stop at 18 months and then only years. Old timer said the other day......you keep counting those days, cause no one else gives a xxxx!
True words. Chips are not necessarily given solely to make the recipient feel a sense of accomplishment and keep them on task, but is a stark reminder to all of HOPE. That is the real message.........

Indeed.. hope and knowing that you youself can make a difference are worth a lot more that what ever chip is given to you..
