What a great post Dee! I loved reading about the frog and thinking of how I have jumped out of the pot just before I got boiled. Thankyou

Hello everyone Just thought I'd bump this thread as it's brilliant. Was just reading it offline.
Thank you to everyone who messaged me - I'm absolutely fine and thanks to Suze for continuing to include me in the 24 hour thread - I have lived up to it and am still sober and happy
I dont sign in so much these days, but I do read posts and wish you all the love and happiness you deserve (which is loads)
Keep smiling!

good post and give me something to think about : ) as i am now convinced the frog would try to get out as that water got to hot ? lol
Don't try it. Others have done so on your behalf. For a start, throw a frog into boiling water and you may as well and onions, other aromatics and herbs;you're on the way to making soup as the frog will be dead. In various experiments frogs indeed try to escape once the water reaches a certain temperature well short of boiling. Much depends on quite how slowly the temperature is increased.

That's just to throw some science in. The essential message of the metaphor remains.

I should have emphasized that I'm not trying to undermine in any way the message of the thread. The thing with parables and fables is to reveal a central truth, and the frog metaphor does this striking ways. Hell, Aesop told many truths in his fables, and these often involved animals speaking to each other.

And, for what it's worth, I've been in the pot and stayed there too long.

Hadn't seen this before, Dee! Glad it was bumped - it is perfect for me to share with the restaurant recovery group I lead. Some amazing people who have just gotten out of the pot will like reading this

But what if it's an 'insect/animal crime?'

A scorpion asks a frog to carry it across a river. The frog hesitates, afraid of being stung, but the scorpion argues that if it did so, they would both drown. Considering this, the frog agrees, but midway across the river the scorpion does indeed sting the frog, dooming them both. When the frog asks the scorpion why, the scorpion replies that it was in its nature to do so.

completely takes the human element out of it.

Its another great allegory applied to addiction but it's not really the same allegory.

GM!

I’m slowly beginning to realize I am surrounded by hot water, and if I don’t get out I will die mentally and physically.

Oh, but I hate being cold!!

I must remember that my body and my mind will get used to my new climate

Some people are a bit too literal. They'd read the fable and rather than learn from it, their first thought would be to wonder where the nearest pond is.

Just as tragic is the curse will be complete and he'll die a frog instead of being turned back into a prince if he sits there...you know...stewing.
