351 Days

14 days till my first year of sobriety!
Think I'm more surprised than anyone of my friends and family that I've lasted so long without a drink.

I knew for some time that I had to stop drinking but it never really seemed like an option.
All my friends were big drinkers and I suppose in a way it's the only way I knew.

I started having blackouts nearly every time I drank, tried just drinking beer and not mixing drinks to see if that would help but I was kidding myself.
Soon enough I was blacking out just after a few beers! Going missing for hours sometimes days not knowing what was happening, I was coming to and I'd be somewhere completely different like someone had flicked a switch and transported me.

My last drink started off having some beers in my own home, I came to 3 days later with no money, no idea where I was and nobody I knew!

That's when I decided it was time to stop!

Nearly 1 year on and life is so much better already, it's still very much the start of recovering but its a start none the less.

Me and my gorgeous wife to be, who put up with me through all the years of my drinking are expecting our first child

I'm fitter than I've ever been and am training to run a marathon, I've quit smoking, the list goes on!
Just wish I'd had the strength to quit years ago!
If I can quit then anyone can and I hope anyone reading this who's thinking of quitting can get a little push from this.
All the best in everyone's recovery, thanks for reading

That's awesome, David! Time to stop thinking in terms of having "lasted so long without a drink" now; sobriety isn't something you have to endure- it's the key to a good life! Sounds like you're doing great.

For the first time in many years I'm seriously getting into fitness! Many times in the past I'd decide to start weight training or running only to abandon it when it got in the way of getting drunk. Now I have no excuses. Plus I turned 45 this summer and I decided it wouldn't get any easier getting fit at 50, or 60...might as well do it now!
