First trip away sober
First trip away sober
Tomorrow marks 11 months for me & also is the first day of a weeklong business trip. This will be my first time away from my family & support network since the great day last summer I finally admitted I had a problem & sought help. Not worried about going back out-I have no desire to go back to that awful daily struggle. I am a bit apprehensive about being alone in a foreign city. Not too mention my sincere fear of flying. Happy thoughts appreciated.

Congratulations on your 11 months. Even if you don’t “belong” there are worldwide AA meetings you can attend without making any commitment. I always find it comforting to be AMONG people who I understand and understand me. A great benefit may be something you hear that’s important at the moment.

Hey Link,
Congrats on 11 months! I know exactly how you feel...I have about a year and a half sober and travel about 100 nights a year for work. I'm actually sitting in the airport now reading your post which took me back to my thoughts as I had to travel to meetings as version 2.0 ( non-drinker ).
What really helped me was having activities planned for when I would normally drink...I.e. go exercise, read a book, watch tv, go on SR and read....if you have planned dinners at night, arrive right on time for dinner and skip receptions. Leave right after dinner to avoid the after dinner drinking crew.
When I used to drink, I had a lot of anxiety about traveling to meetings or for business. Now, I realize it was the side effects of drinking that caused 90% of the anxiety. Being sober, I realized I was making a mountain out of a molehill!
Hope this helps in some way!
