Really getting sick of the spammer...
When I was managing a forum a few years ago I could block accounts by name, e-mail address, and/or I.P.address. I suspect all of that has been tried. Unfortunately the spambots can change all of those rather quickly and open new accounts.
It's annoying as can be for both users and administrators. I have long been amazed at how little spam we see on this VERY LARGE forum. There are probably hundreds of attacks daily. The admins and moderators do a great job.

I would also add that there is a line to walk. The admins can increase the difficulty of opening an account, but that applies to real members as well as spambots. Many many people come here in crisis mode, so increasing the difficulty (and time required) to open a new account could have a huge negative effect on getting new people on board in a timely manner.
The spammers make me ill, but in a sense they are the price we have to pay to get help to new people as soon as possible. Overall, I'd say the admins here have got the right balance of spam control vs outreach.

The mods know what they are doing here on sr...it's just impossible for them to instantly catch everything immediately. Remember they are volunteers. Reporting things does help so do if you notice it.
