It's a tough call. I'm not you so it's impossible for me to know the strength of your resolve. I'm on Antabuse so I know under similar circumstances I simply could not drink. It would be a shame to miss the event, if only for the sake of your stepdaughter. She sounds wonderful. Someone suggested using the fact that you have pneumonia as a reason to bail this time. How would you feel about it if you didn't go though?
You gotta be sensible, if halting life keeps people Sober then continuing on regardless is not the best principle to follow in recovery, but on the other hand, if you have a plan and execute the plan it can be done.
Just hang out with your non-of-age eighteen-year-old stepdaughter and leave the drunk people alone in the evenings. Seems like there ought to be plenty to do at a convention that doesn't involve drinking, especially with a non-drinker to entertain.
It's not a frat party or a scotch whisky tasting event, it's a convention. Stay busy, go to bed early, focus on spending family time. Should be a piece of cake.

Exactly, go and have a good time, a better one than you ever did before because you will be sober and not dealing with hangovers the whole time. Sobriety is freedom. The AV feeds on fears (and that you are powerless in certain settings), don't build this up or your AV will be all over you sensing weakness.

The good thing is in this mobile age you can check in here whenever you need some support. It is great that you have 2 friends who are supporting you during the convention. You sound like you have made up your mind to go. I have attended drinking functions since about day 20 and have never caved.
My tip to you is not to be shy. If someone asks why you are not drinking just say that is not for you anymore but let's have a great time. As long as you do not get in the way of anyone's drinking, they will truly not care if you are not drinking.
