Geeez, what's the deal with you "non sports fans!"

My other "fun fact" was that I used to be a sports reporter. I used to collect baseball cards as a real little guy and I organized them very specifically. As a college kid I worked for the Sports Information Department, and worked up in the press box for Big 10 college football games. It was awesome. After that I worked for the local paper and covered mostly prep sports, but I also covered some NBA and the PGA Tour.

I have been to over 20 major league baseball parks (and 4 EPL stadiums, for you Europeans out there).

Alas, since I know more than the "average joe" I thought it would be a good idea to start gambling on sports. As you can guess, that was during my active alcoholism. As you can also guess, it didn't work out too well.

I was afraid I'd stop liking sports in sobriety, but I still love them!

I collect postcards!
I wonder if I set up a PO Box if all you recovering alcoholics would send me a postcard. It would be amazing to get more from around the world! I could post them on future weekend threads.

(Or is that against the rules?)

I saw them in 1990 in Memphis. I think Axl has improved a bit in the last year. They are in the middle of a 12 night run here and reviews are good.

Posting here to commit to a sober weekend. Not sure I'll write much as writing on the internet is heavily associated with drinking in my case. Best wishes to all!

Brain, it is NEVER junk, it is "undiscovered treasure"! There is a difference. Subtle, but a difference. And who says you can't be a rock star. Christopher Lee is singing heavy metal and he is 90 something for gosh sakes. Then you have the comparative youngsters of Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, etc. I say go for it.

I can picture Olive and the subliminal suggestion. "these aren't the droids you are looking for" "Let Olive leave early today."

LTV, I suggest that if you have a wagon, stick the kids in the wagon and drag them around for a walk. I did that with my kids a couple of weeks ago. It burns off steam, calories and gets you some fresh air. Sorry that this is week three Maybe Olive can send some chickens your way for soup?

Today I took the train into downtown. Too many crazy drivers this week. Is it a full moon or what?! Leave at 5 and then my meeting at 7:00. Yay! My parents have my children so I will have to see how long they are willing to keep them.

time to do actual work. That I am paid to do.

Known for: laughter
Place where I live is known for: strollers and bicycles ( not always in harmony)
Want to be known for: Philanthropy
What positive things I draw on to help: Innate love of life and strong will to survive.
May be surprised: took down drug labs for a living before I switched careers.

Happy sober weekend all!

What are you known for?

Super competitive (sometimes maybe too competitive). Could turn a friendly game of trivial pursuit into World War 3

What is the place you live known for?

Born and raised on Long Island yes Lawn Gisland. Currently living in London.

What do you want to be known for but no one knows yet?

I want to live to 100 and my tombstone will read "He did life justice."

What positive things do you draw in your life that helps you manage being an alcoholic?

My competitiveness helps in this regard. I won't let alcohol beat me.

Maybe share something that we would be surprised to know!

Well when I was in college I was on a calendar...Mr January . I can already feel the abuse coming from this factoid!

Actually, I had better plan on staying sober through next Friday -- otherwise I might go "whoo-hoo" and binge again this Monday or sometime during the work-week.

But of course focusing on this evening and this weekend for now.

Kevin, I've found that it helps make plans to not drink. Otherwise I spent too much time making plans to drink. It gets easier over time once I got the hang of it. This thread has been really helpful because it gives me some accountability, humor, an outlet to blow off steam or just to "talk".

Meeting over. Was ok but I'm coming down with something so my brain wasn't all there. Got a text from a sober friend who is working a thirteen hour shift in the ER at a local hospital. She will be busy tonight. She said a lot of detox patients coming in. I detoxed at her hospital. I'm not looking to return to visit her there, unless Its to bring her a cup of coffee on her break. It was a sobering thought.

BigSombrero, your adventures make my feet itch to go somewhere. I do like the empowering feeling of navigating through a different place on my own. I went to the Florida keys by myself for a week. Didn't know a soul. It was great.

You know, drinking took a lot of that away. I started to confine myself in a box of my own creation. That box started to feel both normal and like a prison. I used to be pretty intrepid. I want that back. I still have it to some degree but not like it was. Fear is so powerful.

Enough musing. Time to get kid A to bed. Kid B already there.

Ruby. Are you a fan of Radiohead per chance?

My house is quiet. Doors are open to the cool crisp almost summertime air. What a lovely evening.

Deep breathing and music for me tonight. Just how I like it. So peaceful.

Tomorrow is going to be a great day everyone.

LTV, I'm not a Radiohead fan per se but you just put me in mind of Karma Police and now think I must listen to it. Is there a kid A there? My musical tastes are pretty eclectic.

Quiet here now too. I read Harry potter to my son. I browned country style pork ribs in the oven. I will make the barbeque sauce for them tomorrow. Eating ice cream. It is rather chilly here tonight. Perfect for sleeping.

Now to Karma Police. Thanks LTV. I like your style.

I often wake up with insomnia, but I actually set my alarm for the middle of the night this time. My husband is leaving to meet some people up in the mountains, and he wanted to be able to serve them some cucumber and onion salad that takes several hours to marinate in vinegar, sugar and dill.

So I just checked SR and will now do the slicing, while playing a bunch of 50s and 60s oldies. I heard one of my old faves the other day and have been on an oldies binge ever since!
