new comer trying to battle a desire

hi. im just out of rehab and taking it one day at a time. today I took a nap and awoke with my first serious desire to have a drink. I didn't think it could be so powerful. im not liking it very much so im trying to battle it before I go to an AA meeting because I don't trust myself feeling like this and being alone on a drive so I just wanted to talk about it and get it away from me. Its not fare that my brain can do this to me against my will.

Welcome. How long was ur rehab stay? Are
you going to an aftercare program that
follows a rehab stay? I went thru a 28 day
in stay followed by a 6 week outpatient
aftercare program.

That was 23 yrs ago as I continue on my
recovery journey today.

Early recovery required my willingness
to do whatever I needed to do to remain
sober. If I got squirrely I knew exactly
where I needed to be. And if I wasn't
able to get to a meeting at that moment,
I made sure I got to one as soon as
possible.

Until then, I stayed busy with my own
2 little ones and family, reading and
listening to recovery tapes of encouragements.

Alcohol was completely removed from
my home so that there was no temptation
lurking to pick up. I followed suggestions
provided in my AA program and from
countless old-timers who paved the way
to follow and remain sober each day.

I learned that I didn't have to be miserable
in recovery or go thru anything alone ever
again because there was always someone
available for me to reach when my mind
got squirrely.

I listened. I learned. I absorbed. I applied
what was taught to me to carry me sober
a many one days at a time down the road.

It can be for you too.

Hang in there Dadof6, go to the meeting location a good half hour early and start talking to people. Get to know someone and let them know you are struggling.

Welcome to the forum.

Hello and welcome Dadof6,

Just know and remember that if you take that first drink you'll be right back to square one. Glad you're going to a meeting.
