Kind of an interesting wake up call

I just found out today (Mother's Day!) that my mom is an alcoholic. I never once saw her drink growing up and that's because she got sober in the late 50s and hasn't had a drink since. I never even knew she went to AA either.

My mom told me her story today and it was a huge wake up call for me. While I WISH I had known this years ago I am glad she finally told me.

I can't mess around with this stuff. It is in my family history and that history has scary stuff I never knew about before. I have to stop drinking. I've been doing well since Friday and am now more committed than ever.

Your post gives me hope. My little girl is 3 and I never want her to be aware of this part of my life. Hope if I kick it now she'll never need to know unless some day she needs support. As for your situation ok you have alcohol in your genes but you also have overcoming addiction in your genes so that's something to be so positive about

To RecoveringMay - I think the point snakes was making is that children have a right to know their genetic makeup has the sensitivity to alcohol. It isn't just nurture, there is a physiological component.

I hope when your child is ten or eleven you share this with her. It could save her life.

Oh I'm sorry, that's a fair point, although knowing it was in my genes never stopped me. I just love the idea that my alcoholism will not impact on my daughters childhood if I stay sober. You're right though and I am a very open person so I'm sure I will share this experience with her when she's old enough to understand. Sorry if I misspoke, still getting used to this forum

I think RecoveringMay makes a good point, snakes. Your mum is showing you first-hand that it is possible to fight addiction even if it's in your DNA. What a fantastic role model for you

So, you can see this as a great example to follow.

Be proud of your mother and of yourself for making this decision.
