I've had a few sessions with him. It's amazing what I've learned so far. My stepdad is an alcoholic. In my teen years, I would come after work and he would be drunk. He wasn't really a mean drunk, more a doom and gloom type. To deal with my anxiety of coming home, I started drinking before hand. This helped go home and erase the anxiety. Fast forward to my adult life. I've learned that I still have that fear of coming home. Even though I live in another state and have my own place, that fear is still present. I never made the connection before and it was a huge revelation. So now that I know what the underlying issue is, I can begin working on it. I still have a long way to go, but for the first time I feel I have the knowledge and support to make real changes in my life. I was resistant to seeing a psychologist but I am very happy I did.

You are attacking this at the root cause, impressive.
