Am I quitting drinking or adopting sobriety?
I'm on day 4.
I've been mulling over if I should be considering this as quitting drinking or adopting sobriety?
I know I'm essentially doing both, but quitting drinking seems like closing a door and adopting sobriety sounds like opening a new one.
Maybe it doesn't make a difference, but I am curious if anyone else had thoughts about this?

Whatever helps works for you to keep a positive mindset. I look at adopting sobriety as a new beginning.
For me, when I say I "quit" something it feels like I am setting myself up for failure. I try to take it each healthier choice, each day as a new one.
Hope this helps.

for me, the most powerful way of looking at it has been "I am embracing a more full, conscious and joyful life".
'sobriety' is a foundational pillar of that, because really everything about alcohol is counter to those principles.
This perspective has helped me feel much more positive about my choice and has helped me a lot in fighting the AV's tricks.

There is no one "right" way to do this. I go to AA meetings and come here and talk to other recovering addicts. I take what I need and leave the rest. Especially in meetings I hear all different takes on the interpretation of the literature and the path to enlightenment. I have several little phrases that I use daily to help me through particular situations or problems.
Whatever you tell yourself that makes sense to you is what you need to tell yourself.

I like thinking how many days it's been since I've been sober, feeling great and not awful. Counting the days without taking a drink kind of leaves the door open for me which I want closed permanently. Congrats on 4 days. I'm right there with you!
In my opinion, definitely don't just see it as quitting drinking, just simply taking out alcohol and continuing on with the same lifestyle will lead you back to the same result.
Your carving out a new lifestyle, a Sober pattern of life!!

I would say you are doing both. The physical act of quitting drinking is one thing in itself. Many people who are trying to quit ONLY "quit drinking", and many of them return to drinking again because they have no plan in place to stay quit. Adopting sobriety to me equates to living a sober life. This may be AA, counseling, rehab, prayer, or any combination. It is a process that changes over time but never completely goes away.
I think you will go far by doing both, and congrats on your 4 days.
