Question about therapy
I am very curious about what goes on in a therapy session with an addictions counsellor. I know that many of you do see a counsellor; without getting too personal of course, what kind of things do you discuss? What is the structure of a session? Do you have any "homework"? Do you work on any plans.. I'm very curious. I know it is obviously different for everyone, but I'd say there are probably some similarities in the way it is approached, I guess?
I was a counselor before switching careers.
Talk therapists meet you where you are. . .meaning they will work with you to determine the best course of action. Sometimes you work a plan, and some counselors will give you homework.
But initially, you will have a safe place to talk, cry, yell.
Best of luck to you, and please pursue this.

I went to an addiction counselor. They take you through the different aspects of addiction and listen to how you doing, if you pointing in the right direction etc.
They cover living sober, relapse prevention, dealung with triggers, doing things gor yourself etc etc.

just to be sure...
My take is that there is a difference between an 'addiction counselor' and a therapist.
Whether others disagree or not, my take is that an 'addictions counselor' would be the same as an auto mechanic. They assess the symptoms and recommend a repair.
A therapist delves into the nature of the problems and works on helping to rebuild the platform. Sort of redesigning your thought process and coping skills.
The goal is essentially the same. But the approach is much different.
The two can work in concert with each other.
