Therapist

Hi,

Struggling and have not really stayed sober unfortunately. But started seeing a therapist, quite weird that he actually suggested moderation. Although he is specialized in addiction. So I kind of felt that moderation will be ok, but of course it didnīt work. Going back to him on Wednesday, it felt good to talk to someone, but it didnīt really help.

Funny, my dad said "sure you can drink once in a while, in social events". My doctor said "no no! you can't drink, period"
I'm still torn between the two

In your therapists defense harm minimisation approaches are pretty popular with alcoholics (and their therapists) for obvious reasons...

the problem is it just doesn't work for most of us.

Morning Laura
Nobody but a well meaning 'non-alcoholic' would suggest moderation to an alcoholic. We know that sooner or later our attempts to drink like other people result in progression and end in tears.
Go with your doc on this one might be a good idea, but i certainly found therapy helped me deal with those issues that troubled me sober.
Without therapy my mother and i would probably have contracts out on each other!!
With help from a therapist i can be grown up around her.
A relief to be sure.

Hi laura567. The difference between total abstinence and moderation is my eternal dilemma. I also went to therapy and read books on moderation, which I haven't accomplished. It all boils down to this: in order to achieve moderation you have to first know how to live a life without alcohol, because moderation doesn't give you the escape you get from getting drunk. It takes some retraining of the mind, only accomplished through sobriety, at least for a long while.

Hi Laura, well now you know at least. If he keeps pushing moderation, change your therapist.

I hear you Dee74. I'm pretty sure that's my case too, since I am on the same boat. I haven't been able pass the detox hump, but I surely intend to pass it now. I even dreamt about it last night.

The only way I can moderate is if I sip on ONE glass of wine for 2hours and never get drunk. The only problem is that I canīt sip. I gulp. :-)
