Toothache! :(

Hi I've been alcohol free for about five weeks now and still have some mild withdrawal symptoms, mainly depression and a bit of anxiety. My question is can I take any pain medication for this toothache without it messing up my recovery? I've tried taking paracetamol but it's not really doing anything for the pain but I have some cocodamol and a few tramadol left in the medicine box. Has anyone taken either of these whilst in recovery? Just don't want to take some and be in a world of hell and anxiety tomorrow :(

Thanks

I have a tooth going bad. I take ibuprofen 800mg and a Goody's powder and put orajel creme (not gel)on it. It works very well.

Ah yeah, forgot about ibuprofen I'll go and get some now :) I'd imagine a higher enough dose of paracetamol would suffice but I don't want to put my liver through anymore punishment :/

You can take any painkiller, as long as it is prescribed and you don't abuse it. I'd advise you get off of it as soon as your tooth is better because the stuff can be addictive.

Some people in AA consider this a sobriety violation, I don't. If you were doing recreationally - just taking pills to "zone out", that is different and would be a break in your sobriety, IMHO.

The tramadol was prescribed to me but it was for when I broke my cheekbone a year ago and I needed surgery to sort it out. I've made a booking to see the dentist on Tuesday and I just need something to keep the pain away until then. The ibuprofen seems to be working but it's good to know I could use the cocodamol/tramadol without messing me up! Never had a opiate addiction or any other apart from devil booze!

Thanks for your advice guys :)

If you are in the UK, try getting some Anbesol liquid.
Its a tiny bottle.
You get it from chemists.
It is like miracle juice for your teeth!

Just be careful with the Tramadol, it is and opioid. Not a true opiate but can cause problems with withdrawal if abused.

have ya checked it for infection? maybe an antibiotic and a dental appointment?

My motto is always go for the lesser painkillers first.
If ibuprofen is working there's no need to go for anything else :)

tylenol and ibeprofen actually worked better for my toothache i had. It was a bad one. you have to switch on and off so you wont get sick

Yeah that's what I thought, lesser the pain killer the better :) Ibuprofen has seemed to have done the job, I guess because I still have a bit of anxiety due to the alcohol withdrawals I panicked in case I couldn't end the pain and I sort of needed to know whether opioid painkillers were there if needed - I really hate toothache as I'm sure everyone else does!! I think it's an infection, pain seems to be in the gum and it really hurts if I bite down on it, just hope I don't go into a panic if it needs removing :/

Glad you are feeling better.
