Unemployment and Drinking
I found volunteering was a great way for me to get out of the house, in contact with people, and out of my own head.
I have no idea how the US system works but what about volunteering in some capacity with legal aid or something?
I bet it'll look good on a resume too

Ok, yet more advice (I also volunteered with our career services office in law school and was a mentor to 1Ls when I was in my final year): go to the library and check out "What Color is Your Parachute?" There are a lot of helpful exercises to help you understand what makes you tick and to be able to define your skills and preferred work environment. It is almost magical how easy it is to get a job when you are excited about what you are pursuing. My current job is not practicing law, but involves public service and helping people and advocacy. I knew after my first interview that I'd likely get the job. It's also been this job that has made me realize how well suited I am to the practice of law (which I though I disliked): I love research, I love advocacy, and I really miss court!
Allow yourself to get to know yourself. Dee's advice about volunteering is excellent. And to pay the bills, work in a restaurant, coffee shop, retail, or sign on with a temp agency (I did that back in 2007, and actually worked at a law firm).
