Antidepressants and alcohol dont mix

I have had severe depression since I was a teen and went on medication for it when I was in my late 20's. I started drinking heavily in my 30's and my doctor warned me that alcohol is a depressant and it would make the depression worse. Well, I did not listen......I finally quit drinking over three months ago and now I see what she meant......
I was walking around in a depression for years although I kept taking the medicine.
For the first time in a long time I am starting to feel alive again. I actually look forward to living and doing things. I am excited about spring this year! I cannot remember when was the last time I felt this way.
If you have depression, drinking is really making it much worse. Of course, I had to learn the hard way!

Yeah, if I had back all the money I spent on antidepressants over the years while drinking, I could buy a house.

One real simple thing alcohol does to many drugs is flush them out of your body before they can be effective.

I spend about $15 a month on antidepressants because, frankly, I become suicidal without them.

I am on escitalopram (cipralex) and for the first year of taking it I was drinking daily. Went off of it, suddenly I was so mellow and my OCD calmed down a great deal. I guess it makes sense that a depressant and an anti-depressant counter each other.

Never took anti-depressants personally.

But ever since I stopped drinking I feel a thousand times more positive

I've been on anti Ds for many years but they didn't do their job while I was drinking. Now that I'm sober they really help.

I take anti depressants (very mild ones) but have never mixed them with booze, so I don't know, My prescription just says don't mix with alcohol or operate heavy machinery. xxxx
