just starting

Today is the day. I have prepared myself the best I can. Wondering if I need to dive into hobbies to distract my mind or just accept the hard moments (i know stopping will mean facing why I started).

Hello, and welcome.
Just do what feels right to keep from drinking. Maybe attend an AA meeting.
Congratulations on your decision to quit.

Congratulations on starting day 1! I have taken the approach of throwing myself into other hobbies just to keep myself distracted over my 3 weeks since my last drink. I've tried to focus on things that don't cost too much money like going to the gym, taking walks, reading more etc so I can see the $ savings of not drinking. Unfortunately I seem to have developed a late stage golf addiction and probably flushing more money on that than I was on booze, but I'll take it!

I would also suggest trying either AA or AVRT, or both. when I quit drinking and only exercised, I ended up feeling so good about myself and looking good that I decided to celebrate and show off. took me a while to figure out that I first need to take care of the alcohol problem by finding an appropriate program of recovery, but each case is different, mine was really bad.

Good for you!

I do think you need to accept that there will be some hard moments.

But, it's also important to remember that we usually need to make changes in our lives when we stop drinking. The stopping itself does not usually fix everything.

Good to meet you Firey. I think it will really help you to be here with us. You're never alone.

Staying busy and distracted helps - posting and reading here relieved my anxiety in the beginning. It was so good to be among people who understood what I was feeling. You can do this.

Thank you everyone. I think staying busy will help. I am a knitter so I guess scarves will abound this year.
