I'm on day 40, while I don't miss drinking, I'm sad to say I miss several friends that I realize I can't hang around. I'll also miss the Nola Jazzfest crew. This is almost harder than quitting..

Welcome, J!

I needed to re-think a lot of things in my life when I quit drinking, especially the people I hung around with and the things I did. Joining SoberRecovery is one good step forward, and now you can learn how others cope.

Welcome Jkirk.
Looking after you is the main thing.
It's sad that you may lose friends along the way, but you'll make new sober friends. I tried hanging out with some old drinking buddies and found that, in reality, other than drinking we didn't really have much in common.

Hi Jkirk,

Firstly truly well done on a fantastic first 40 days, In my view by far the toughest I encountered (so far) I was the same but sometimes it's for the greater good initially when a weakness can occur, but once you are comfortable with your new self enough you can maybe be around friends and alcohol although this is not for everyone I agree. I am now semi comfortable to be in the company of people drinking which in the first few weeks I honestly though I may never be ever, but once you allow your body to detox and settle on a balanced diet mixed with regular exercise and the all important B vitamins it does steadily improve day by day. Hopefully your friends will appreciate what you are doing and not try to hard to make you join in, because if you are anything like the way I used to be then just one could potentially open the floodgate and set you back hugely on what is a fantastic achievement and one you should be immensely proud of my friend.
Congrats

Congratulations on 40 days, jkirk. The music is still out there. It didn't go away just because you are currently sober. And you may find, as I have, that it is just as enjoyable to listen to jazz sober as it was when you were drunk. It is just a different kind of enjoyable. Try it. You might like it.

Welcome to SR. I am glad you are here with us.

Well Done Captain!
You'll find that the longer you are sober. The better music sounds. - real music of course.

Welcome jkirk

Getting sober meant missing a few things for me too - but the next year I went to things I wanted to go to because I knew I would stay sober no matter what

give some time over to yourself and personal development and build up those 'sobriety muscles' for a while.

You won't regret it

I went to a hockey sports draft that I participate in which is held in a bar to which I was the DD. Somehow I avoided having a drink and I was happy that my friends didn't ask me 10 times if I wanted a beer.

Captain, Just be cautious. Do your friends know?
"somehow I avoided" That sounds like maybe you were tempted... just a thought.

Keep on keepin on.

Good point LBrain, I haven't told them yet, but I wasn't tempted. I miss the party scene for sure, but I miss feeling horrible less!
