Handling anger and stress

I have 27 days under my belt and am following the 12 step program and seeing my sponsor twice a week, plus 5 - 6 meetings per week. However, during work hours, when things get overwhelming, I get very angry and tend to want to run out and grab a beer. I know this is not the answer, but the drive is very strong. What do you do to distract or remove this thought? I have prayed, called my sponsor (she's at work and can't talk) burned through about 10 phone numbers now and have not been able to get a hold of anyone. Hence I'm hear again... What do you do when you feel like you're going to explode?

Try to step back from the work situation before you get angry, if you can. I usually escape to the washroom for a moment if I'm upset at work and try to focus on the calm place within me.

I hope you feel better.

Mindfulness Workbook for Addiction: A Guide to Coping with the Grief, Stress and Anger that Trigger Addictive Behaviors.

This was the first book I got when I quit drinking. It helped a lot. Other books and practice with mindfulness for relapse prevention are helping me grow rather than regress. I don't know if I would be at all sane or sober without these steps.

Thank you to the both of you. Zero - I'm going out and getting the book tonight. It usually doesn't happen very often at work. But it was very bad today. Thanks again!

Congrats on 27 days!

I agree with Anna. I would try to remove myself from the situation even if it's only for 5 minutes.

Hang in there!

I just keep repeating the serenity prayer until the serenity kicks in.
It hasn't failed me yet.
