I think I'm ready

I've been abusing alcohol since the day I turned 21. I'm 37 now. I definitely had a drinking problem in my early twenties... the blackouts, wicked hangover, concerned friends. When I got married and had kids I seemed to be able to moderate, but over the last few months I've been drinking during the day and gone from 1 or 2 hangovers a year to 1or 2 a week.

It's 11pm, and I have a hangover... from today. I know I can not drink tomorrow. Beyond that I know I need some help.

You'll find lots of support here!

Don't worry about the day after tomorrow or next week--a popular saying around here is "One day at a time."

Welcome Trixie, I think we all know when we have reached that scary moment when we realise our drinking is not normal and controlling us rather than the other way around. At least you have realised this. This site has helped me more than I can say x

Welcome Trixie.

You have children, you will have quality time with them instead of feeling hungover ;-)

Thanks for the warm welcomes. I got through day one, of course it's usually easy for me to abstain when I'm sick from the day before. I sort of spent the day immersed in recovery anecdotes online. Usually I spend hangovers trying to go about my business pretending, even to myself, that I'm not miserable. The shame is actually the worst part of them for me.

I'm nervous about tomorrow, but I know where to turn to get through the cravings.

Welcome. Have you looked into any type of support group? Quitting is difficult, but it IS doable and there are a lot of people who are willing to help you get past this.

Welcome Trixie,

Good for you getting through day one. I could go days without a drink, the hangovers, remorse and shame were the killers. You sort of get used to feeling like that, I am so glad I never have to feel like that again. You don't either.

All the best
CaiHong
