Going to my first meeting tonight
Good for you Natalie. There's nothing to be afraid of. You'll be surprised what you learn at the meetings. You'll find a lot of things in common, with others.
Don't be afraid, hold your head up high. Every one there is the same, all wanting the same thing, "Sobriety."
Aarryckha, there's nothing to be terrified about
What we should be terrified with, is continued drinking.
Wishing you all the best.

Natalie,
I too was very afraid at my first meeting. I've been to four total now and can honestly say that I haven't had any problems and felt very welcome in them all. At the beginning of the meeting, the chairperson will ask if there are any new folks. Just raise your hand and tell them your first name and that it's your first meeting. The group will take care of the rest!

I also just started going a short time ago. At the first meeting, I had 12 people introduce themselves and 1 guy put out $10 to buy me the Big Book.
You may be surprised just how welcoming people are. Don't be nervous, they are people just like you and I promise they won't bite!
I would like to suggest that you check your area for a chip meeting and attend it. Get your 24 hr chip and keep it with you as it just might help you fight the urge for a drink.
Stick around after the meeting and introduce yourself to some people. Where else do you have the chance to meet sober folks?
Good Luck.

I just went to my first meeting three days ago and i was terrified. Fear of who is going to be there. Fear of what they will say or think. all these things were going thru my head. But i went anyway and found out they really are genuinely happy to meet and help newcomers. Dont let fear get in the way of finding the help you want and need.
You don't have to speak much, but do say it's your first meeting. They will likely give you a list of phone numbers to call for support.
Just go with an open mind. The people are there to help you stay sober.

Hey, it's really awesome that you're going to your first meeting. Congrats! I am still building up the courage to go to one myself... there are regular AA meetings nearby me, but I haven't yet gone, because I'm so intimidated! Let us know how it goes, ok?

Don't do what I did and wait 7 months before going to your first one. I was so scared.
It turned out fine and I loved it. That's been 2 years ago. I really enjoy the women meetings. The women are so supportive.
Just breathe and go. I cried through the first one too. How embarrassing!

That was me yesterday - except only four days sober. Women Only meeting, I cried all the way through it - such a flood of emotion. They were wonderful and loving in every way! I got lots of phone numbers, and it will become my home group, for sure.
