Hello

I am a newcomer. I am well aware that I am a functional alcoholic. Although, last Monday I was out of work due to hangover. I figure I have been a real alcoholic for a year, with 3 years building up to that. I started the beer to kill my appetite. Yes, I've lost 90 lbs. Oh? And now look at me! I'm a drunk! I was never a drinker. I'm 43. I still have never actually drank a "Shot". But I can now down beer after beer! Oh yes! I'm the life of the party. There are so many things online. I just don't know how to start with quitting. Help!

I could down beer after beer, too, and was also the life of the party. Until I ruined it.
Realizing you may have a problem is a great start. There are programs of recovery people use. That would be a good thing to check into.
You'll find lots of support here, and welcome.

I am gushing

I am almost in tears over the support. I mean, I know all the freaking things that are said. It's true of course! I just NEVER thought it would happen to me. I knew the signs. Runs in the family... Seen it over and over... and then BOOM. It happened to me! It did. There is no denying it. I'm hooked. And not just a little bit, it's full swing. I'm afraid of the physical problems from stopping. What do I do?

See your physican. Tell her of your drinking (full disclosure) and your desire to quit and what she can do to ensure your withdrawals are managable.

I'll admit. I'm too embarrassed to go to the family doctor. Same with AA. NO ONE has a clue.

I agree with Carl. A doctors knowledge of addiction will help so very much in the beginning.
There are meds that help with withdrawals (which can be very serious from alcohol). Not to frighten you at all, but please understand the undertaking of alcohol withdrawal is nothing to mess around with.

Welcome to the family.

UMMM!! Wait a Tick! I'm embarrassed to tell my Dr. cuz he's a family friend. I should be realizing that he's seen this before. Pride?

I doubt that...but say it's true, keeping it a secret aids the addiction, not your recovery.

Miss, you asked for help. Don't be your own worst enemy and put up barriers to getting better.

Same with me, no one knows. Even when I TELL them they either don't believe me or they think its my age. Probably bc most everyone I know drinks more than I do. If im an alcoholic then they are too!

Welcome to SR!

Welcome to SR. Even if your GP is a family friend he's still bound by confidentiality. I felt relief when I spoke to mine-the fact he took it seriously and was kind was such a great help. I was embarrassed but he said it's amazing how many 'functional' people do have drink problems. They've seen it all before

Huh! I really have become so full of "Bull" that I have convinced myself that my own Dr. wouldn't understand. Thank you very much ReadyAtLast. Huh! I've helped, supported, never cared to judge about others with this problem. They had it. It happens. I never really liked alcohol... Until I hit 40. I just am so embarrassed that it happened to me. I know quite a few people who would completely understand. Yet, I'm embarrassed. I must be so selfish.
