Introduction Hi, I discovered this forum while searching for what to expect at alcohol detox. I still have questions. So anyone with general advice, please chime in. I enter detox tomorrow morning on the recommendation of my physician. Just a little about me. I had once abstained from alcohol for an entire year to prepare for a military school. Since I have started drinking again, my life has become about alcohol. I write a beer blog, am known in my local beer community, and plan my activities around alcohol. I thought I had it under control because I only drank on weekends. Lately, I've been hitting it so hard on weekends that by the middle of the work week, I was experiencing terrible withdrawals. This culminated last night. I was catching a cold and instead of beautiful rest, I experienced hallucinations, "shocks" (which seriously may have been seizures), and a racing heart beat. I hardly slept and I "woke" up as sick as I have ever been. I visited my doctor this morning, and he recommended detox. I also have persistent PTSD and social anxiety; neither of which have ever been diagnosed or treated (other than self-medication with beer). I am presently a wreck, and trying to pull it together. I am here to seek advice and support. Thank you. |
Welcome! Just keep posting. We got ya. |

Welcome to the family. You are smart to go to detox. They will make sure you are comfortable and safe while detoxing. I'm glad you found us. :) |
Welcome WBoarder. |
Welcome xxxx |
Glad to have you with us WBoarder. You're not alone. I'm so glad you're under a doctor's care & are going to detox. The symptoms you describe sound scary. Thankfully you never have to feel this way again. I hope you'll let us know how it goes. |
Hi and welcome. Going to inpatient detox was one of the best decisions I made. Physical withdrawals were comfortable with medication I was given. Lots of support here to help you along. |
Welcome to SR, WBoarder. You will find much support here. All the best with your detox and keep us posted on your progress. You are taking a huge step in the right direction. |

Welcome to SR! I agree that writing really helps with healing. |
Tomorrow is the day, but tonight I sinned. I was so fearful of how horrible last night was that I drank tonight. I considered it a last "hurrah." I feel like such a bad person. Worse, I did something I have never done, and took a sleeping pill after drinking. This may be indicative to how badly last night went, and the extent I am diving to avoid the same. I am sure I am not the first, but I am so excited for detox, so as o overcome this cycle. |
I visited the D-Tox facility this morning and met with a doctor and a counselor. I was given Altivan for anxiety and Trazodone to help sleep, and allowed to detox at home. I committed to sobriety and joined my provider's counseling program. My first group session is tomorrow night. I am looking forward to this new life. |
Sounds great WB. It will be wonderful to be free of it. |
First group session tonight! |
