Soon to be father - Quit time
Soon to be father - Quit time
Hi guys,
I'm fresh to the site and am straight out of Australia. My wife and I are expecting our first child in June, so it's time to get my life together and not follow in the footsteps of my father.
Not gonna lie, I'm scared of being a father (despite wanting it for years now); however I'm strangely more scared of being sober. Alcohol is my poison and my strength. It allows me to numb out prior issues that burden me yet at the same time, distances me from reality. While it seems easy enough to many to just stop, as I'm told frequently, it's not that easy for me as I'm sure many of you know yourselves. I get sick pretty much smack bang on day three of sobriety and end up having to drink or I just get worse.
Any tips on how you guys went about it? I've not really got many friends; by choice; so I keep my distance from most people. That being said the "change of friends" isn't a viable quitting option as I can just as easily not see them as I do see them.
Any and all help is appreciated.
Cheers in advance,
Dibbs

Welcome to the family, daddy-to-be. I'd suggest seeing your doctor for medical help in getting safely and comfortably thru the withdrawal. Meds are often given and can get you past that 'danger zone' of day three. If you can just stay sober long enough you will start to see the benefits of it.

Congratulations on your impending fatherhood!
To stop drinking I had to make changes in my life beyond not pouring liquor in my face. Not drinking is easy. Living happily sober took some work.
Best of Luck on Your Journey!

So happy for you in coming to this decision. I spent a lot of time drinking when my kids were small. That's my biggest regret! You can do this. Check out all the posts. Find something that works for you. Many blessings to you!!
