Immune system suppressed

I'm on day 10 and have caught a horrible cold. Is immune system suppression apart of withdrawals/recovery or did I just catch a cold? I rarely ever get sick. I feel terrible today but I will take this over a hangover any day!

I found I bounced back more quickly that I had in years. I got sick on a Saturday about 4 months in. I cancelled all my Monday appts because I was sure I wouldn't be up to them. I was shocked that I got better so quickly, and that I could have gone to my appts.

I think a lot goes on with our physiology in early recovery. I have heard someone liken it to a swan on a lake that looks like it is moving slowly yet it is paddling furiously beneath the surface. It takes a while for our bodies to figure out that another dousing of toxic liquids isn't about to happen. Take care of yourself!!!

It stands to reason that your body is a little confused/ overwhelmed at the moment. But even if that's not the case "Tis the season" for flu!

Like Jaynie, I was surprised when I got sick recently- it was MUCH shorter lived/less intense than anything I've had in AGES. I had pneumonia TWICE last year- drank/smoked right through it... no bueno.

It's an interesting question as most trials show that drinking heavily suppresses immunity but the stress of withdrawl or early sobriety certainly gives the impression that colds are quick to show.

A lot of people get sick in early recovery - no sure of the science behind it but it stands to reason to me that my immune system might be a little low - withdrawal is stressful, physically and mentally.

Hope you feel better soon Jill

if you were drinking, yes, alcohol disrupts the entire digestive system, and our immune system is mostly made from the digestive tract......

see a doctor and be honest, maybe they can help you or send you to a nutritionist

When I drank, I used alcohol to treat everything, so I really didn't acknowledge when I was truly ill....
