Exclamation New to online support

Hello. I have probably been an alcoholic for 20 some years. Trying to stop using alcohol many times. I tried AA, never got a sponsor. I never was very religious either, so it just didn't work for me. AA cannot be the only way. I was married 23 years, went through a 5 years divorce process, moved 4 times, thought that I found love, was with him that 5 years, moved in with him, moved out...and I could go on and on. I know I use alcohol to escape. I also know that contact with my previous friend is a trigger but I don't feel as if I want to be without him. I go to a therapist weekly but have noone else to talk to. No parents, friends. I feel so lost and alone.

AA is not the only way, it's just probably the most widely known way. Take a look at the Secular forums on here...

Welcome to SR! There are many paths to sobriety. AA is just one of them. I stay sober with a combination of counseling and using this site. It's been working over four years now.

There's a lot of support and people to talk to here TheLightShines - welcome

There's many different approaches and methods of recovery around too - here's some links to some of the main players:

http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...formation.html

I recommend you visit the Secular Connections forum if you think you may benefit from a non 12 step approach.

Glad to meet you TheLightShines - you are definitely no longer alone.

I joined SR in desperate condition. Knowing I had people to relate to made a huge difference to me. I found the courage to change, and you will too.

Welcome. Some AA meetings might be more religious than others. There is a big variety of meetings. It's very likely that you can find a non-religious sponsor in AA.

Fortunately there are various forms of recovery and different types of support so you aren't limited to AA.

Stick around and read some threads. Get everything off your chest. This is a good place to be.

As you can see we are an understanding group and I'm glad you joined us.

The important thing is that you find a recovery method that works for you, whatever it might be. We are here for you and we do understand how hard this is.

I can't thank of of you enough for the kind words. I am going to therapy today as I always do every week. I will read some threads this evening and try to understand the way this site works. I am not real computer savvy. I have not ever posted on a forum and i am not sure how to just repond to a certain person in the forum, so i have a little work to do there as well. Thank you all!!

You're doing fine, TheLightShines. SR is my first and only experience with an online forum as well. You will get the hang of it quickly enough.

Welcome to SR. I am glad you are here.

Welcome. Thank you for posting. I don't subscribe to a higher power as such but I've found it shouldn't be an impediment to a meaningful recovery. SR is a great place to "let it out". If you feel you have nobody to talk to, I've found, that the people here can be wonderful.
