New and nervous

Hello! I am just getting my feet wet after spending several weeks reading posts and wanted to say hello. Trying to cope with some stress with soon-to-be in-laws without resorting to bad choices. Any advice?

Welcome Natlaw. Finding new ways to deal with stress is a big challenge at first, but it's actually easier to deal with sober. Have you quit drinking?

Not completely. I stopped drinking totally for about 3 weeks but I have had a glass or two of wine with dinner since. I am working out / listening to music / reading this site to deal with stress rather than drinking now.

Natlaw Sorry to hear about the breakup - I found that thinking 'if I drink i'll be giving them what they want' worked for me. Not sure if it applies to your situation.
Great to have you here

You may feel like you have more control and more clear headed without the alcohol. Good job on working out, The physical activities are great as well as making your life less stressful.
It is really up to you. Are you wanting to just take a break/cleanse and see how things go, or do you feel in your heart you want to stop for good? That is what did it for me. One day brain just switched and complete awareness of what A was doing to me and have not gone back yet. Good luck. Glad you come to SR. It is always great to read posts and other situations. We are not alone.

No break-up, just dealing with the stress of wedding planning with a soon-to-be family who has some different religious beliefs and is causing strife between my fiance and I. There are mental issues involved and it has been difficult on my relationship and on my family. Trying to take it one day at a time.
