One day at a time, x365

The earth has made one complete lap around the sun since my last drink. It's been a long year, in no small part because I was awake and sober for it all instead of anesthetized or passed out. If you see that I joined two months before my sobriety date (and I read for a few months before that), you'll see that someone can make it to a year - and hopefully beyond - even after many spectacular failed attempts.

A friend relapsed recently, saying that in the back of her mind was a nagging feeling that she wasn't done yet. I have those too. While I don't know the specifics, I have a pretty good guess as to what waits for me at the bottom of glass should I choose to refill one with wine - self-immolation, only from the inside out.

At one year the only thing I can say with any certainty is I don't "got this." With the tragic death of Philip Seymore Hoffman we are reminded that addiction shoots to kill, irrespective of our number of days or deeds. Awareness, honesty, self care are all allies we need to cultivate within ourselves, remembering no vest is truly bullet proof.

That said, the view from here is breathtaking. Life offers so many more possibilities than when I was hunched over the toilet, ruminating over things past, or figuring out how to straighten out yet another situation. My new normal consists of enriching relationships, concerts, a clean living environment, and some extremely satisfying days.

Heartfelt thanks to you who share your stories and support, and to the mods who work tirelessly to keep this ship afloat.

Time will pass anyway, why not try to get the most out of it while we can?

That is so great upandup. I cannot wait to be at a year. It sounds like you are really happy and enjoying one year of sobriety. I made it this long because of SR support and stories. Have a good day.

Congratulations and I like the way you put it: 365 x 24. I have to stay in the 24 but it's not easy for me.

Thanks for the kind words and support! It is kind of a private victory, but one I can openly revel in here. Break out the fireworks!

They do add up. Even hour by hour. Just get through. Early going I had to avoid people and places where I wouldn't trust myself. If something or someone was unavoidable I made sure to seek out support for days after the event. Wishing you well, snipe.
