Question About Anxiety

I keep reading in posts here that since quitting drinking many people have much less anxiety.

I was completely unaware that drinking could PRODUCE anxiety - I thought it just relieved it.

My questions is this. I suffer from acute social and generalized anxiety - always have, To the point where I was prescribed 8mg of klonapin every single day - plus xanax for a bit on top of that) for over 10 years.

I am wondering if anyone can be more specific about what type of anxiety their drinking created??

In the 8-12 months that I was drinking more regularly--like every day for the most part--my anxiety was worse. But I am so used to having it that I don't know.

can you be more specific with what the anxiety felt like? when and where did you experience it?

Just trying to figure out if maybe my anxiety will resolve itself now that I am no longer drinking.

Thanks!

Nicole, I also have generalized anxiety and have had panic attacks since my teenage years.

I didn't start drinking until my mid-forties when I decided to self-medicate. Of course, it worked well briefly, and that's the hook. Then quickly drinking became more and more of a problem and my anxiety level increased. Stopping drinking did not stop the anxiety but brought it to a manageable level. I have read a lot of helpful books on managing anxiety and that has helped too.

I also suffered from generalised anxiety, even before I drank. Drinking was at least in part self medication for that, and for a while it worked....

Like Anna stopping drinking did not stop the anxiety but recovery, along with some counselling and some guided meditations, relaxation and breathing techniques help me to keep it under control, mostly

I too have generalized anxiety, but the alcohol induced w/d anxiety just felt like a complete lack of ability to be 'still'. To relax. I felt like I was always moving, racing. Sometimes I would pace the house out of frustration.

Since getting sober my anxiety med does its job and the anxiety is much less.
