Day 1, trying AVRT

No wine in the house, I'm going to stay away from the shops so I don't buy any today.

Been reading AVRT and the voices I can hear are saying;

"Yes stop for a few days and then you'll be fine to start again"

"Yes stop for a few days and then you'll really deserve a couple of bottles at the weekend"

"But remember that binge you're planning in 2 weeks when you have a weekend to yourself, don't miss that opportunity to drink and eat as much as you want with no one watching..."

"The stress you have to deal with needs a drink at the end of the day"

Gosh, these voices are loud and frequent : (((((

They get quieter over time, but they will try and sneak up on you. Identifying them is the key to AVRT really, that's half the battle won x

Hello Ludo,

I'm finding AV really helpful (day 25). Recognising the voice takes experience I guess.

I call my voice The Slug, and it's amazing how he'll slime his way into my rational thoughts.

Keep up the good fight.

Been using AVRT and ye, I get those thougth too and they can drive one nuts. but in AVRT, jur recognize them for what they are (AV) from the Beast and move on. in other words don't get into a dialogue with the AV. I used the crah course on the ite for a while along with another tools, but I knew that I needed more, o I got the book from Jack Trimpey. I could not find the book her in north Africa; but a good amaritan from this forum ent me the book all the way from North America, just to show you if we want sobriety bad enough, we go to any lenght(this last phrase ounds familiar, don't it? lol AA)

AVRT is working well with me at the moment. I am almost at 80 days and so far so good.

The very second I hear something from from my AV I will shut it down.

The AV has been very quiet for the last few days and I will need to guard up in case it stages a stealth style attack I have been hearing about.

Hi, LolaR. Yes, you can find out what these folks are talking about by googling 'rational recovery' and 'addictive voice recognition technique'. Look at 'the crash course' for a good introduction. Our Secular Connections forum has a lot of great discussion - just look for threads with 'AVRT', 'Big Plan' or 'Beast' in their titles.

For the folks saying that they are 'trying' RR, I would suggest that any lack of confidence in yourself is not about you or your ability, instead it is your addictive gizmo trying to pull another fast one on you. You most certainly can quit drinking. And it is not RR and
AVRT that 'work', it is you, it is all you. There is no timeline required here, this is something that you decide, once and for all. This is a big deal, it is permanent and unconditional sobriety we are talking about here.

You have everything inside you already that you need to quit drinking. Believe in yourself and you will succeed.

Yup. They are also completely powerless if you ignore them.

Hello everyone,

Thanks so much for your replies : )))

The slug, lol !

I like that one, maybe mine is the fungus or the mould, or something else, I'll ponder it....

Yes those vouches are powerless if I don't listen and don't give them any time or space in my head.

Feeling really good at the end of today, I know I'm not going to drink today and that feels fab to be so confident.

Mind you a friend asked earlier if I wanted to go out for dinner on 6th Feb and I immediately thought;

1. Sh@t I can't, I've stopped drinking!

2. That's ok I'll start drinking again, I knew giving up was a waste of time and I'd never do it.

3. Oh maybe I'll drive, stay sober and actually go there for the food

These thoughts were all within 5 seconds of her mentioning the dinner but I'm glad I got to number 3 and I feel good with it at the moment.

Staying strong xxx

I have now checked out AVRT and love it, thanks to all of you ! It's the 1st "program" that makes sense to me. Never knew about it before, AA sure doesn't mention it.
It's sooooo simple, yet real and effective. I'm going with it, or "it's" just with me now that I'm aware of it.

Hi Ludo! AVRT was what finally seems to have worked for me. I read Rational Recovery and it just clicked. Learning to recognize the AV at all times was difficult at first but now I can recognize it even in its most diabolical forms. You know, when it really tries to sneak into your mind ever so slowly to eventually make you think drinking is the right choice. Once I got that down, things got so much easier and I think about drinking so much less now than ever before. Best of luck!
